Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse opened its doors in East Fairmount Park in 1899. Funded by Richard and Sarah Smith, the site was dedicated to the memory of their adult son, Stanfield. Smith’s beautiful, 24,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – 6 1/2 acres of open fields, wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment.Smith’s mission is to provide children 10 and under from diverse backgrounds with free and accessible one-of-a-kind play experiences that meet their physical, behavioral, and developmental needs.

This *free* children's playground was really fun. The outdoor space has a lot of creative climbing toys that move and spin in ways that are great for active young kids. The ideal age range would probably be about 2 years old to 5 years old. There is a really cool slide enclosed in a shed that you go down riding... More

It was a very nice, big playground. Not just ordinary swings and slides. It had a wooden slide where you have to use a burlap bag to get down. Very different climbing structures and rubberized grounds near all the equipment. Kids loved it.

Smith's features many payground attractions that are safe and well maintained. Spread out over a large grassy area, children and adults can burn off a lot of energy on imaginative playground equipment not typically found in city playgrounds. There's also a giant wooden slide for all to try. Today's featured attraction was Daniel Tiger - a children's superstar!

Nice place with open space and playing to do for kids. There are some trees for sitting in the shade. It's free or you can donate. Free nearby parking 15 minut drive from center philadelphia. Indoor house play doesn't have as much toys then outside and no air conditioning indoors

We visited on a Sunday morning. The playhouse is a HUGE mansion, however it is pretty limited space that you actually can explore. It is nice for toddlers to play, not older children. I went with my twin 5 yo's and 4 yo. They liked the mansion for a little while. The playground was nice a big. They had a... More

We visited the play place in April and is was great to explore with our two boys (2+4). The inside is a bit limited for the older kids but wonderful for the small guys. The playground outside is amazing and fun for all ages. I would recommend going on a week day and early to avoid crowding.

A huge purpose-built mansion as a play space for young children. Not sure of the exact ages, but I would say the indoors is for under 5 (with an adult). It is free ($5 donation suggested). There are 3 floors. Each is very large - the top 2 have lots of toys and play areas. Kitchens, trains, cars, lots of... More

Great place for kids. Two year old had a blast and if I wasn't a germaphob I'd let my 9 month old play indoors! Tons of things to do. Pack a lunch, donate to the museum a few dollars and spend a few hours romping around! They are not open on Mondays!!!!

My two year old had a blast here. He is very energetic and there was always something, indoors or out, to grab his attention and keep him occupied. With three stories worth of toys and creativity outlets indoors and multiple playground areas outside, it was hard to believe this was a free place to play. Now I know I can... More

We took our two year old grandson here to play and what a fun time we had! No admission charged but well worth the $5 suggested donation. Loads of space to run and explore and great playgrounds that are wonderful for a specific age group. The toddler area is just right with enough things to climb on and in including... More
