If you like the history of the west you must stop at Fort Davis National Historic Site. They have restored a good portioned of the buildings and documented the site/foundations of the other buildings. Very interesting readings and pictures that gave you a good feel what life was like back in 1850's-1870's. Very large fort site that can take you... More

We enjoyed the museum, barracks and hospital. The buildings are spread out on the property so I suggest not going on a hot day. Lots of great artifacts to see. I would allow at least 2 hours to see this place.

We've been to several of the Texas Frontier Forts, and Fort Davis was definitely one the biggest and most scenic of them all. While they are all different, this one is unique in its own way, nestled in the Davis Mountains. It's worth a trip, and it'll take you way more time than you think it will— but in a... More

Most of the shells of the fort buildings were preserved. A few buildings were also restored on the inside. Keep in mind there are about three different forts on the grounds. The Park Service does a good attempt to outline the structure of the former/older buildings. There are some trails to walk on in the shade that go back to... More

The Fort dates from the 1850s and represents a valuable piece of American history. Well preserved buildings and grounds give a great insight into fort life for soldiers and fort families. The park offers a nice museum and explains the fort's role in securing safe military and commercial travel ways from San Antonio to California. For families with children, the... More

We spent a couple of afternoons at FDNHS. Their museum and exhibits are very well done and our young children enjoyed learning about the fort. There is a lot of walking involved but they do have golf carts for those who are mobility challenged. We hiked some of the trails as well. Gorgeous views and not too terribly difficult to... More

Very good preservation of the old fort. The self guided tour allows you to visit several of the restored and un restored buildings. Park staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.

We spent a few hours here touring the site and hiking a few trails. You are able to go through most of the buildings and get a glimpse into how difficult life was a century ago. You learn that it took 6 weeks to deliver food and supplies from San Antonio and of one couple who lost seven children within... More

We have visited several historical forts. This is one of the best kept and restored. It was so much fun to see how the soldiers and and their families lived. It was a hard life yet it was a close knit group as evidenced by the medical facilities and stories. It was great to see how they decorated for Christmas.
