My son is a freshman at JHU. He has enjoyed the time but has never worked so hard. As a swimmer, he literally is studying or swimming. When we visit him, we rush through dinner so he can get back to studying.

The University has some lovely buildings and small parks. The area has some friendly little cafes and coffee bars and a very good Barnes and Noble. The Art Gallery is based here as well and is very impressive.

The closest to the university is the Inn at the Colonnade - A Doubletree Hotel, at 4 W University Pkwy, Baltimore, MD 21218. It is directly across the street from the campus. Nice place and very convenient.
