I think this is the oldest national cemetery in the USA. It has headstones from pre-civil war to present. It is right in the city within walking distance of hotels and restaurants and shops. It is only blocks to a national historic site.

It is a humbling experience to stand and see the silent graves of only a fraction of those who have served our country. The grounds are beautifully maintained, from corner to corner. The stones are kept clean and free of debris. Some of Fort Smith's earliest "celebrities" are interred here, such as Judge Parker and his replacement, Judge Clayton.

The Fort Smith National Cemetery is a beautiful peaceful site that serves as the resting place for nearly 14,000 dedicated armed forces personnel and spouses. Rolling hills, tended grass, and trees combine to support this awe-inspiring experience. This cemetery is exceptionally well maintained and it was nice to see the effort that is being put into this National site. We... More

If you're touring Ft. Smith, you'll probably want to make a short stop at the National Cemetery. It's only a few minutes' walk from various other attractions (the national historic site, the Trolley Museum, etc.) and has plenty of interesting graves. Judge I.C. Parker is buried here, as is General Darby. You can also find the graves of USCTs and... More

The FSM National Cemetery is an absolutely beautiful place of rest for many of our local heroes from yesterday and today. Many photographers go there to capture the beauty there especially of the older, original section of the cemetery and highly recommend going to see it and walk through this beautiful, peaceful place.

This is a very well kept property, but I wouldn't expect anything less for our military personel.I have made a few visits, after all my father is one of the many local vet's laid to rest here on these grounds. It's definitely a tribute to the many who served us.

Beautifully maintained. Serene. The National Cemetery is the rest place of several thousand of our nation's heroes. It is a sobering and somber visit, but reminds us of the cost of Freedom.

I have been several times, but when we visited at Christmas time this past year, it was just beautiful! I would encourage anyone to take your time, go to the visitors area and read about this location. So many have given served our country so we can have the freedoms that we enjoy today (& take for granted myself)
