This use to be a wonderful family friendly attraction. It was very interactive and hands on for all ages. It was a beautiful living history museum but it is no longer open and in disrepair. So sad.

This museum is no longer open to the public, is unsafe and in disrepair. We live in Rome. If you are interested in canal history, try The Black River Canal Museum in Boonville, NY or the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse. Both are less than...More

The website says open for the season... but closer look at other pages suggests the site has not been updated for years. The parking lot is almost undrivable (mud/potholes) and most of the buildings look abandoned. I do not think this is in business any...More

This place is easy to miss. At first glimpse, it appears to be one more abandoned property on the list of thousands. The buildings look like they are about to collapse. It's even more difficult to determine when the place is open. The tiny sign...More

The website indicates open every day but when I arrived on Wednesday, the posted hours show it's closed on Wednesdays. It's just two buildings and an old packet boat. Not worth the trip even if it was open.

It looked like at one point in time (probably decades ago) it was a great attraction. Now, the only thing to see is a couple of broken-down buildings and the Sports Hall of Fame next door.

Visiting Erie canal was a very nice experience. I personally helped clean it up and I can say it's must see. There's almost an eerie(no pun intended) feel to it. Mostly because of the old buildings remaining on the property. All the way in the...More

We stopped, got out of the car turned around and got back in the car and left. I remember when they built this place and at one time it was nice but now it's run down and most of it is not being used. What...More

It was real attraction for the area, located at the place where (the story is told) the Erie Canal was started. Locked up now and there doesn't seem to be any online presence telling anyone when it might reopen.

We were there for an event. I was so saddened to see the buildings declining from neglect. The boats were no longer safe to use.
