Given that we don't experience those temperatures in Australia, this was a must do for us. The cold room is located in the Riverboat Discovery Centre, within the large gift shop and to enter is free. If you want to buy a photo of your experience, the cost is $6. So, with anticipation we lined up for the 2 minute... More

We did it & wanted a photo. There was a camera malfunction so we had to do it a 2nd time. I paid for the photo to be emailed but to my disappointment, they lost it due to a "computer malfunction". I requested a refund via credit card & they charged me again instead of crediting. I gave up.

This is really a big tourist store, but entering the 40 below freezer is a "cool" experience. You are only in there for a minute or so, but it is an experience you'll long remember. Pictures are available for you to purchase, of course, along with guide books, Alaska history books, food, t-shirts, etc. It was a fun way to... More

ok this is for sure a tourist trap but it was certainly worth the expense (free) and experience (^%$# cold). You are in there for just about 1 minute but your nose hairs will start to freeze together. We bought the silly picture as a souvenir, Be sure to plan your picture pose BEFORE you go in because all you... More

40 below is colder than you think. A wonderful gift shop and restaurant. You can actually go in a room that is 40 below and have your picture taken. We had a wonderful beef stew and fresh garden salad before boarding the Paddle wheel riverboat.

It's quick, it's fast, and you'll appreciate just what 40 below feels like. It's free for the experience, but you can buy the photo afterwards. Picture or not, go for the experience. It's not something you get a chance to do very often.

There is a cold locker housed in the Riverboat Discovery main building on the Chena River. It is a novel way for tourists and others to experience the extreme cold weather in the Alaskan countryside. The temp is 40' below and your picture is taken and you can order various types of ways to preserve the event. Great memento of... More

My wife and I experienced this after an enjoyable boat ride along the Chena River. The only cost is if you buy the picture which is taken. Being from Chicago, it honestly didn't feel that cold since you only enter a small room at this temperature for about 20-30 seconds. However, it was entertaining watching people from warmer climates experiencing... More
