We were so sad that the smoke/haze prevented great views. But it was still worth it. 14 miles hike from Many Glacier lodge, shorter if you start at Swift current. Final push past the lake was hard, but we didn't think we'd ever be there again so we did it. Trail is long and sunny take water. Trail did not have any really steep or slick parts so just one foot in front of the other.

Great hike. First 2/3rds is through fields and woods, but then breaks open. It's this section that makes the trip worth it, but the view on the far side of the tunnel is exceptional!

There's a small lake at the foot of the final elevation gain to the tunnel that makes a nice place for lunch. Given that so many folks hang out at the tunnel (see above comment about views), this lake is a nice alternative.

The hike can take up to 7 hours depending on how good of shape you are in. It is very strenuous with an elevation change of 2300 feet. Be sure to take plenty of water and snacks and bear spray. There are several steep trail climbs along with several switchbacks once at crater lake. Make sure to check with the ranger to see if the trails are open due to bear activity and if the tunnel is open. You will not be disappointed with the view from both sides of the tunnel!!

This hike is somewhat strenuous as you are constantly in somewhat of a going uphill state. The views are worth it! Carry bear spray, take your time, enjoy the nature you don’t see sitting in your car!

The Ptarmigan Trailhead is located adjacent to the Swiftcurrent Motor inn and is approximately 11 miles in length roundtrip. The elevation gain is about 2,300' and as you approach the lake the vistas become more and more amazing. Three switchbacks ascend from the Lake to the tunnel and the view as you emerge from the tunnel is fantastic.

This is one of my favorites. Very difficult and the final climb is tiring but it’s well worth it. Views from both side of the tunnel are amazing.

Very nice hike that branches off the Iceberg lake hike. Not as crowded because of the length and difficulty level. Not that bad till the last mile or so. Very steep with long switchbacks to the top. The tunnel is amazing as are the views from the other side of the tunnel. Can be very warm on the last leg as you are out of the trees at this point. You'll see many animals and the bears can be seen on this trail as well.

Great view and on both sides of the mountain range. The view is the best in the park, of course that is my opinion. A few years back, we saw two grizzly bears in a battle down in the valley on the north side. The CCC did a great job carving out the tunnel and the ledge on the other side.

We rode the regular bus to the area, and was able to view the scenery. We did not get to see any goats or sheep, but the flowers were beautiful .

We were so excited when the Ptarmigan Tunnel doors opened during the middle of our Glacier NP stay. It's 10 miles round trip-- can be combined with Iceberg Lake but make sure you know what you're getting into! We did it as a separate day- start same trail as for Iceberg Lake- behind the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, up the short steep connector trail and turn left for the main trail up to Ptarmigan Falls. After the falls turn right to Ptarmigan Tunnel. Trail through the woods is fairly steep, continues up and around past Ptarmigan Lake (a hidden gem) and up to the tunnel. Gorgeous views back down the valley. The tunnel walls are amazingly dry, did't really see any bugs or creepy crawlers or scary critters (young marmot tried to check us out). Out the back of the tunnel opens to the Belly River and Elizabeth Lake area and more incredible views. This hike was much less crowded than Iceberg Lake, I thought the views were just was wonderful.
