This was the starting point for visits to the park for visitors arriving by train. From here they would proceed into the park by boat.

I wish I could have seen the staff from Belton Chalet meet the arriving guests with refreshments, dressed as Swiss Milk Maids.

Stopped by to check out the building. History shows that trips by rail to park on West end of the park started out here. Horse or motorized vehicle took folks from depot to Apgar to get on boat to be taken across McDonald Lake to the lodge now known as Mcdonald Lodge. Depot has been meticulously preserved as it was and is now occupied by the Glacier Park Conservatory. Hertz rental cars can be picked up here all hours of day if come in via Amtrak today. Gift shop and visitor information inside. Not a real busy place but worth a stop if have 30 minutes to spare, as is just outside West Glacier Village when you exit or enter the park.

We stopped here because we were looking for local information. The lady working was able to answer all of our questions. When we were in Glacier, my husband wasn't able to get his passport book stamped at all the visitor centers...the Belton Depot has all the stamps so my husband could get them all. The lady who was working suggested we go to Two Medicine to see the historic hotel and to eat our packed lunch by the lake. It was a great suggestion as we did both. We didn't know about either one until she told us.

Great, knowledgeable and friendly staff, including Bear, the laidback dog, who can’t stop wagging his tail when you enter. Live webcams from various places in the Park. Great place to learn more of the history of the park, and see what other sites in the park look like, even when they are closed due to the weather. Great selection of high quality gifts and souvenirs of Glacier National Park and the Great Northern Railway. It is a wonderful stop during your travels.

I had missed some of my stamps for the National Park Passport book and a ranger informed me that all the stamps were available at the railroad depot.
It is a short walk from the West Glacier Restaurant (go south under the railroad tracks and turn left). Or you can access it from Highway 2 before you enter the park.
It is operated by the Glacier Natural History association and includes a gift shop and bookstore.
