We enjoyed this trail. It is in the sun and I would consider hard, a lot of elevation. Awesome views at the top!

First, I’m a 63 year old man who had significant back surgery 9 months ago (L4-L5-S1 spinal fusion). I try and exercise daily but don’t over do it, walking and elliptical. So if I can make it to the top I think most people can.

Second, this trail is about 3.8 miles one-way. So the entire trail is about 7.6 miles up and back. And it’s a 1,860 elevation change. The first mile is fairly level, the next 3 is mostly three long switchbacks up the mountain. Yes, the trail is a climb up that mountain in front of you (!) to the top where there’s a small building you can climb a staircase to, and walk around for a 360 view (and a large tall antenna next door).

The views are awesome. Yesterday there was snow at the very top, but I was able to get through with tennis shoes.

Try this, but just be aware what you’re about to do!

This is a very strenuous hike, but well worth the effort, as you are rewarded with breathtaking views of McDonald Lake and the surrounding valley.

We planned to make our second attempt at Avalanche Lake (our first one, ten years ago, had failed). We got to the trailhead at 6:45 a.m. (by design!) and got a parking space right across from the Trail of the Cedars. But, no. Closed for bear activity.

We raced up to Logan Pass to do the Highline Trail. We even got a parking place. But it was forty-four degrees, and the wind was blowing so the cold rain felt like ice. We went and ate, but we were pretty dispirited.

While eating an ice cream cone in Apgar, we looked at a map. Saw this trail.

Got in the car at Apgar at about two-thirty. Started hiking about quarter of three.
It's a fairly straightforward, uphill hike. I think it picks up eighteen hundred and fifty feet. It's an efficient, utilitarian hike. Nice view at the top, and we were back in the car by six. Good little workout.

The bottom two-thirds or so is made up of thick, new growth. Right to the edge of the trail. It would be very easy to surprise a grizzly. Interestingly, we encountered a number of groups, but none were obviously making noise or carrying bear spray. Be careful out there!

We didn't have time to do a lot of hiking in Glacier but this is one we decide to try. Turned out to be a good hike of a couple of hours or so but the view was worth it.

This was the first hike we did at GNP and provided interesting views of a previously burned area that is regenerating as well as a great view from the lookout at the top. The view is definitely worth the hike.

It took us a few hours to complete this trail, but the view at the end is totally worth it. There are plenty of switchbacks making this trail perfectly manageable for many.

This was a moderately strenuous like. We are 60ish and in decent shape and the view from the top was gorgeous, but like others have said, there is a cell tower and some trees that do block the view. It was definitely worth the effort, but it was one of our first hikes and having hiked other trails in Glacier since then, I wished I'd paid closer attention to the comments about the view blockages. That said, there are places to get an unobstructed photo of the lake, but you have to walk down from the top a little and get the right angle. Given so many options at Glacier, we prefer getting to the top, and enjoying 360 degrees.

This is a 7.2 mile strenuous hike. The terrain varies as you climb about 1,900 feet. Probably shouldn’t have been our first hike this trip. Did see some wildlife; an unidentifiable bird, chipmunks galore and a squirrel, but no bears. Bear spray is recommended though.

Everyone and published guides talk about the view from the top. Honestly was disappointed as much of the view of the lake was screened by trees.

Still a good hike, pretty scenery, and good exercise.

Hat tip to Jake Bramante, whose guide helped me pick this one.

Added plus: it’s very close to the western entrance to Glacier and the Apgar Visitor center.
