The drive up to the parking area is certainly teeth-chattering. We drove it in a Suburban, but there were many small cars making the trek as well without any problem. It's not particularly steep and there are no large obstacles, just a very rough, unpaved...More

Located just south of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and preserve on a Bureau of Land Management parcel, Zapata Falls offers a beautiful waterfall in a narrow gorge much akin a cave. Zapata Falls and the stream which it forms a part of, flows...More

The road up and down is awful...no one's fault, it's just a mountain road thats rutted and full of rocks. 2.8 miles up at 10 mph had me expecting something good. Unfortunately the stream up to the falls is icy cold (waterproof boots, shoes or...More

We were not planning on visiting the falls after our afternoon at the Great Sand Dunes, but decided to give it a go when we saw the sign and googled the falls. Road to parking lot is very rutted and rocky. A high clearance vehicle...More

I LOVED the walk up the creek to the falls. Wearing hiking boots with gators kept my feet dry and warm, but my husband had on water shoes and enjoyed it with cold feet. Another tip...hiking poles helped me to stay on the dry rocks....More

Trail thru pinion trees is easy, except for the rocky surface. Wear hard-soled shoes. Crystal-clear brook and mountain waterfall at the top, with benches to rest on. Excellent views of the Dune field. Vault toilets at parking lot. Road to parking lot is as bumpy...More

On our way to the sand dunes I happen to come across these falls on the Roadtrippers phone app. It listed it as a Place of Interest. I mapped it. The drive up is rocky, 4 wheel drive / SUV with bigger tires is recommended....More

This is a great example of the power of water. Fed by the high mountain snows the creek has cut through the hard stone into softer material and has left and incredible cut into the earths crust similar to what you might see in slit...More

The waterfall is really beautiful and the small stream that stems from it on the outside of the cave is a great place to sit and relax after the hike up there. The ice is dangerous inside so caution must be taken. The road leading...More

Can midsize SUV be able to drive up there to the parking lot through bumpy road? How bad the road is? Will it be a safe hike to go with a 5 year old?

Jog stroller might be okay on the trail to the stream, but you have to hike in the stream to get to the falls. Maybe a baby back pack would be best, but take care as it is slippery walking in the stream...and cold. Wear... More

Hello! Taking my wife and 9yo son to Zapata Falls this weekend. Was curious if you can hike to the lake from the falls, or did you go to a different trailhead? Google Maps only shows a small stream from the lake to the falls, but not sure if thats how you get there. Thanks for any info you can share. :) Best, Bill

The hike ends at the falls. You actually have to hike up the stream a little ways to even see the falls, nowhere to go but back out the way you came unless you climb the falls.
