Having heard good reports about the fireflies cruise we bought two tickets at the tourist information office. At 5:30pm we were told to go aboard the second boat that wasn't as full as the first. It was schedule to depart at 6pm. As it was still docked at 6:30pm we left. What a flop!

The cruise was supposed to be from 5pm to 7.30pm. The boat left only at 5.30pm while they asked me to be the at 4.30pm. Then we were back to Kampot at 6.50pm. So the cruise was very short, we stayed close by. I don't recommend at all.

Nothing better than slowly folating down the river on a taditional style boat enjoying spectscular views and an amazing sunset! A great alternative to the party boats covered in neon lights and blasting out music... Although I'm not sure Chims boat had a tiolet...there were only 4 of us on the whole boat during the trip which was great. Don't expect to see hundreds of fireflies when you stop at the place they are, we saw maybe 8 at most which was a little underwhelming but still cool!

Very basic boat, didn't look particularly safe. No toilet. No chairs, just 2 benches to sit on on each side. Railing looks like it's about to fall off. There are plenty of bigger nice looking boats available for 5 dollars as well at the pier. Check them out before you book anything and pick what suits you best

Captain Chim's is a good alternative to the several party boats that offer river cruises in Kampot. If you want to avoid being on a neon-lit boat with drunk people and loud pop or Khmer techno music, this is your best bet: no lights, no music, no bar, no frills. Just an old fisher boat with some benches, a quite and peaceful cruise up the river to relax and enjoy the scenery. One drink (softdrink, beer, coconut...) is included in the price and is ordered beforehand when you book the tour. The itinerary of the sunset cruise is similar to the one from the party boats: about one hour up the river and then return to Kampot town. Since it's a small boat it can enter a small bay on the side of the river to observe the fireflies gathering at this spot (bring some repellent because the mosquitoes also gather). And since unlike the party boats this boat is not illuminated like a christmas tree it's also possible to actually SEE the fireflies. On the downside, the boat is quite run-down. The planks are already brittle, the rusty railing is falling apart and I would guess that safety is perhaps not the strongest point of the company. To be honest, I would not feel safe to go on a ocean trip with this boat and it might also not be the best choice if you bring small children.
