Excellent lake for boating. Swimming can vary depending on the amount of algae. The dirt at the bottom of the lake can get a little gooey in places also and has a horrendous smell to it. Not sure why. Fun to cruise around on and see the Governor's mansion, the Union and the Beach.

From our room at The Edgewater, the frozen lake was winter wonderland playground, The weekend of 3-5 Feb 2017 filled our days with fun invigorating walks on the lake; chatted with locals (especially the ice fisherman); watched kite skiers crisscross the vast lake; roast marshmallows; and watch beautiful sunsets.... Sit down and enjoy the view from the UW's Memorial Union Terrace or one of many parks and public spaces surrounding the lake. It makes the UW Madison Campus one of the most scenic public university campus sites to be found anywhere.

You can experience this lake in so many ways. Located only a few blocks from the State Capitol and the University campus, it's a large beautiful lake with bike-paths, beaches, comfortable places to hang out, and at least one place to rent canoes and other water-craft if you want to get onto the water. Behind the Student Union is a... More

We happened to be there as the Supermoon was rising and the sun was setting. So beautiful there, a great place to walk, run, ride a bike.

This is my favorite of the 4 lakes that are located in the Madison area. The UW is situated along the shore, making all water sports available to the community of students and faculty. Sunrises and sunsets are gorgeous, Of course the Lake is best during the spring, summer and fall seasons.

We took the opportunity to spend time walking around the lake. It was amazing how clean the entire area was where we walked. The late afternoon views were beautiful. A great place to go and enjoy nature

It is view to behold if you are at the lake when the sun sets. The area is nice and you will always find people walking, bicycling and having fun. It is a great place for a walk or for meeting someone.

Lake Mendota is beautiful, and behaves as a large lake, not a small one. Although choppy and windy the day I visited (September 2016), it was a great treat to sit on a small dock off the University's Union Terrace and take in the boaters, ducks and people watching.

Madison is located between the two lakes; Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. Lake Mendota covers the vast area of Madison Metro area. However, the good spots to enjoy the lake view and lake front is downtown Madison and along trail in University of Wisconsin. The Lake has many parks and trails for bikers and joggers.
