After doing numerous hikes on Maui, I would first like to say the drive to the trail head was a piece of cake! Signage is limited, but when you see a cattle gate that states enter with Permit Only you are at the entrance. When we arrived, which was early (a little before 8 am) because we wanted to be... We hiked down to the leper colony in Kalaupapa Valley. It was a muddy hike and slippery and strenuous (but we are from Colorado so we did it anyway) 3.5 mile hike down steep switchbacks. The local airline has good deals to fly into the colony and you can mule ride out (or mule ride both ways). There are a... More

On Dec. 10 flew topside with Makani Air and hiked both ways with bus tour at bottom. Trail was nearly impossible due to recent rains and mule traffic. Ankle-high mud holes at every step! Promised lunch was not provided because it was stuck on a plane on Oahu. NOTHING to eat or drink from arrival at 7:30 to departure at... More

It is a nice view from 10,000 feet to watch the sunset but not worth the drive or time it takes to get there

I had the honor and privilege of experiencing Kalaupapa last week, along with three others. We are all over 65 years of age, but frequent hikers, so we decided to take the challenge and do the hike down to the historical park from topside. We allowed 2 hours for the hike down and that was about how long it took.(Tours... More

Children under 16 years old are not allowed into the park. The last residences of Kalaupapa, who decided to remain at Kalaupapa even though they could leave, negotiated with the NPS to preserve the history of the peninsula. St. Damien and St. Mother Marianne Cope were recently declared saints by the Catholic Church for their service to the patients here.... More

This National Historic Park is a tribute to the brave people who lived and died here and to those who cared for them. Over 8000 souls are buried in cemeteries in the park, each with his or her own tragic story.Today several patients still live in this peaceful, sacred and beautiful place. Many of the original building have been preserved.... More

Not too far from the Phallic Rock is Kalaupapa National Historical Park. High above the Leper colony or Settlement you experience spectacular views of the Kalaupapa Peninsula. It's aa easy walk from the Parking Lot and you'll be richly rewarded for your time.

I had been looking forward to visiting for years and was not disappointed. A lot of history here. It is slow and quite. If you are interested in the history behind this park then you must visit and get some of the local stories. The hike down is beautiful, but rough, especially if it is muddy. Consider taking the donkeys.

This was the second time I've taken the Kalaupapa mule ride to the peninsula and had the Damian tour. The scenery going down and at the bottom is spectacular. The view of the Pali sea cliffs that rise 2000 is breathtaking. I think this is one of the most beautiful scenic views in Hawaii. The mule ride is a bit... More
