If you've driven from Hilo around the south coast-hugging road and then up to Kona, you know how long it can take. The Saddle Road is a great shortcut across the north side of the volcano, from Kona to Hilo. It only takes 2 hours...More

We used this road for the first time on this trip. It was so nice to cut off about 30-45 minutes of driving time from Hilo to Kona. The entire road is paved, with no services, but it is so convenient!

Saddle road is the fastest way to get between Hilo and Kailua kona, approximately 1hr 45min. No utilities along the road just a few call boxes.

A moonscape of black lava(2 types) broken by plants attempting to find foothold. Broken by cinder cones and old massive volcanoes make the saddle road one of those things that needs to be seen and and appreciated. Not pretty but rugged and worth it

I use this road few times whil on vacation on Big island. It is nice, smooth ride, quite uphill towards Mauna Kea and steep downhill after that, but earth it, even with a small renting car. Weather changes dramatically- heavy rain on Hilo side, sunny...More

By far the quickest way to get from Kona to Hilo. Road is new almost all the way. Still a little construction at the Hilo end. All done from Mauna Kea to 190 junction.

Please, go ahead and cruise this beautiful cross island road...just don't plan to be in a hurry. Get close up and personal with the local topography, nothing to do but enjoy the company of wind, volcano's and whomever is in the car with you.

We started out from Kona with little bit of overcast sky so saw a lot of the scenery. It was really nice looking. We even saw an old army air strip. That was just before it started to rain, then it became a down pour....More

We saw "before" Saddle Road and just drove all over the "after" Saddle Road. It is a great way to get across the island. Paving is great and smooth. There is a "straightening" project going on so certain parts have no lanes and temporary traffic cones...More

This is a wonderful new road, no potholes. I Remember when rental car companies wouldn't let us drive on it!

Drove from the Kohala Coast to Hilo on the Saddle Road last month & it was an easy 90 minute drive without any of cliffs or windy sections. This is coming from someone not used to driving on the right hand side of the road... More

It's a smooth shot from Kona into Hilo. About 60 minutes if you speed, around 75 minutes depending on traffic along a very smooth new highway. There is a rest stop along the way on the north side of the road at a state Park... More
