Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded in 1831 as America's first landscaped cemetery. A National Historic Landmark, its renowned landscape inspired the creation of the nation's public parks. Mount Auburn was designated an Important Bird Area by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, reinforcing its status as a significant wildlife sanctuary. Still an active burial place, Mount Auburn Cemetery provides comfort and solace to countless families. The Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery was established in 1986 to assist in the conservation of the Cemetery's natural beauty and to promote the appreciation of its cultural, historic, and natural resources. Over 100 public programs are offered annually by the Friends to educate, enrich, and inspire the community. The Friends seeks financial support for education and interpretive programs and materials for the public, specific cultural projects, and operational support for horticultural rejuvenation and the preservation of the historic monuments, structures, and archival artifacts and records.

This is certainly one of my favorite places to visit. It is a serene escape within the city. The cemetery is full of wondrous architectural and design elements, as well as an incredible selection of trees and fauna.

Mt Auburn Cemetery is a beautiful place to walk just about any time of year. Trees, flowers, and ponds make it a great way to spend a few afternoon hours. And there are historical gravesites to visit as well.

This Cemetery is soooo beautiful! There is so many interesting old trees! People go there to take pictures of many species of birds! Some of the stones go back many, many, years! Some parts have water falls too!

Although "graveyard" may make you queasy, don't fear, This is a beautifully landscaped park with lots of historical interest and inspiration.

Expansive with well tended paths, gardens, ponds and trees. A nice place for a spring or fall walk. Also a great place to bird watch. But it is still a cemetery(with many famous early Americans laid to rest there); no bikes, no picnics etc

It is a bit of a schlep from Harvard Square but well worth it. Beautiful and (mostly) quiet. It is a wonderful spot to spend an afternoon in the cool fall weather.

Yes. Motor vehicles are allowed. There are several places to park along the way. Would suggest stopping at the info center to get a map for sure!

I believe so, just inside the main entrance. I've certainly seen cars circulating through the driveways, but the cemetery is best appreciated on foot.
