- Girasole MarziaRome, Italy331 contributionsA visit to the Saline is a mustSplendid morning discovering the Saline Conti Vecchi, first an hour's walk inside the former Machiareddu village and after an hour with the train, the guide and Mr. Giorgio, now ninety-year-old former manager of maintenance of the factory in full operation, before machines replaced the majority of men. I am happy because everyone enjoyed the visit, showing sincere and constructive interest. To be repeated in summer to enjoy the maximum splendor of the intense colors of the Saline. - Antonio CSardinia, Italy208 contributionsAbsolutely an experience to doBeautiful experience that I recommend everyone to do at least once, in the initial part you visit the office premises and the workshop with a short film, then you move to the carpentry shop where in addition to the explanation of the production of salt via film you can see photos vintage and various types of salt. Then there is the exciting part of the visit to the salt pans with the train which lasts about an hour with a guide who explains all the phases of the process. Highly recommendedVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 June 2024

- Pier8 contributionsVery interestingSalina still in business. In the guided tour you start from the historical part of the salt pan from the foundation to the present day. In the train ride you realize the activity of the salt pan with the various processes to get to the final salt mountain. Also very beautiful is the lake landscape with the presence of pink flamingos and many other fauna. As always the two guides who accompanied us very good, prepared and enthusiastic!Visited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2024

We start by watching two videos while waiting for the guided tour to begin. The visit to the house museum is interesting first of all for the explanation provided by the guide, then for the film that shows how the engineer Conti Vecchi left a positive contribution to the people who worked and collaborated with him and to the territory through his reclamation project and construction of salt pans. The train tour then begins with the guide showing the salt pools, the salt "mountains", and the natural oasis with flamingos, herons and many other species of birds. The complete tour lasts a couple of well-spent hours. The guides are very knowledgeable and help make the experience unique.

What a pleasant outing, and who expected it. I'm almost ashamed to have visited them for the first time only at the venerable age of 46...and oh well it's never too late!!!! :)
Very professional and friendly welcome, viewing of two very interesting videos, even almost touching, the one seen in the "workshop", finally sightseeing tour with a wheeled train, driven by a SUPER WOMAN, Mrs. Elena, my greatest compliments. It is pleasant to converse with people and especially WOMEN who are capable, educated and love their work. Sincere congratulations. Worth returning to visit the workers' quarters and more.

I especially found this one-hour train ride very enjoyable and informative. We had a 'engine driver' who told us a lot in the meantime, both in Italian and English. There was plenty of room to ask questions. We saw many flamingos along the way, always fun!

There isn't a whole lot of info once you arrive on where to go and no one was around to ask...and the fences were closed/locked. Just park in front and wait if no one's there. For us, someone arrived finally, opened the gate, and we followed them along the drive to the building. They have us about 30 minutes to see the outbuildings and watch the available movies which isn't enough time as the movies along run more than 30 mins combined. Still, it's an interesting area to see and well preserved. The tram ride was great as it was only ourselves and another family. Great guide and a unique place to experience. I wish we could have climbed Mt. Salty!

The site itself was really nice, both mini movies are beautifully done and very educational but the best part were the three young guys that worked there during our visit.
All of them were very helpfull, and really tried to make us feel like at home.
The train ride is also very nice

Strong combination of pleasure, culture and nature! Would encourage every tourist to Cagliari to take some time to visit this! Too less known and recommended by the tourist guides and online guides ;-)
English guide can be a point of improvement.

I visited the site last Saturday, on a cold Winter morning. You reach the place after a short drive from Cagliari and by the time you park the car, you entered into another world. At the reception, a helpful woman told us the options for ticketing and informed us that the small train taking us around was going to leave in 20 minutes, just the time to watch the intro video that she was going to set up in the other room. She invited us to look around as we were the only visitors, so the train was going to wait for us. The projection room is a former workshop, huge, with very high ceilings, ancient pieces of machineries everywhere. The film - a history of the saltworks - is projected directly onto the wall, extra large, and consists almost entirely of original footage, suggestive albeit a bit edulcorating of life it the perfect village built just for the salt workers (and it never once mentions Fascism or Mussolini). Anyway, an experience. Once the film ends, we get out and onto the train where we notice two more guests: an old man on a wheelchair and a middle aged man who, once we take place inside the train, introduces his father as someone had worked in the saltworks for 30 years. So I had the privilege of taking the tour between the narration of a very competent guide and the memories of the old worker who recognised the places and asked the guide for the other people who used to work with him, calling them by name. To my surprise, the guide answered that often some of the former workers come to give him a hand with the tours, to talk with the visitors. The train trip around the saltworks takes around 40 minutes, with as many stops as it is allowed by the wildlife that lives in the water (lots and lots of beautiful flamingoes, some herons and other birds that I didn't recognise). Once back, we visited the other rooms of the main building: offices and laboratories that have been reconstructed with extreme care for details (old phones, the original books etc etc). There is also a nice gift shop. I cannot wait to go back in Summer because apparently the landscape changes dramatically. And they are going to open a restaurant and a tea room on the premises. Yeah! Highly, highly highly recommended!

As always, when you visit a property managed by the fai, you find magnificent places, maximum care of the place, competent guides.
Here after the visit and the very interesting footage, there is the tour of the salt pan by train and it was beautiful.
Thanks to Guide
