I had driven past this park for years without ever really knowing it was there. This is a great little historical park offering some interesting facts and perspectives of Fort Darling in the Civil War. There is a nice overlook of the James River and...More

I've visited this place a few times over the decades and really enjoy it. It is brief, but it gives one a great idea of how the South strategically defended Richmond during the American Civil War.

Hot, steamy morning after T-storms last night. Pleasant 1/2 mile walk along paved & gravel trail to earthworks overlooking the James River. Squirrels, woodpeckers, butterflies, and dragonflies among the wildlife seen. Very quiet, secluded from I-95. Helpful interpretive signs and 1 cannon and great view....More

Towards the end of the war there was an interesting battle that took place on the James River as the two sides used their exiotic early submarines to attack Richmond. This site was a battlement that overlooked the river skirmishes. There is not a lot...More

A beautiful elevated spot looking over the James River. It held a strategic advantage for the defense of Richmond during the Civil War. There is a short easy trail from the parking lot to the bluff. It took me a long time to final go...More

While the "fort" still exists, you will have to use your imagination to view what it looked like in 1862 as the mounds used for daily life and holding munitions have caved in. You are still walking in the same steps as soldiers and the...More

My wife and I are Civil war buffs and one of the most enjoyable experiences we have on our trips from one battlefield to another is when the site is virtually unchanged from the way it was in 1861-65, like Gettysburg, Antietam, Vicksburg and Shiloh....More
