What a hidden gem! The frescos and art work are worth the visit. We were staying in Montefalco, but I would travel to see it.

We visited this amazing church last Sunday. It was raining at the beginning and we had basically a private visit, just two of us, me and my husband. I’m not sure if it was due to weather... but I have a feeling that it’s not so crowded on a regular basis. The ladies at the desk were very nice. We purchased our tickets and went downstairs. Entrance is €7 euros per person but you can use these tickets to enter other museums & churches in the region that are a part of Umbria Terre Musei (they are valid for two weeks). The church is incredible!!! It has so many interesting and beautiful frescoes! We heard about this place during our visit of Arnaldo Caprai and we wanted to find the frescoes with Petrarca, Dante & Giotto that were used for the winery’s special Sagrantino (bottles’ labels portrayed those famous figures in modern interpretation of the local artist). Those images are located in the apse, which by itself is stunning, and done entirely by Gozzoli. There is another notable work in the church - beautiful fresco by Il Perugino. But the rest is all amazing and fascinating too. I’m a big fan of frescoes. We spent 40 minutes inside admiring all of this incredible art. The building was constructed in the 14th century, frescoes were done mainly in the 14-16th centuries. Some are badly ruined but it makes you feel the time and wonder how they looked before. Spectacular place that we deeply enjoyed visiting and highly recommend for everyone who comes to Montefalco.

No trip to Montefalco should be without a visit to the museum and church. There is an interesting collection of art in the museum, as well as stones from older buildings and a variety of tools and clothing. But the frescoes in the church are the real stars. Stunning.

A museum on three floors - art on the top level, a church on the middle and archaeology at the bottom. All very interesting with some great story boards for kids in the church.

Frescoes in church comparable with those in Assisi. A nice museum with a separate presentation of additional masterpieces. Free wine tasting of Montefalco wines. The ticket is valid for some nearby attractions (I would recommend mosaics in Bevagna).

We visited once again and were treated to a concert with three opera singers from Perugia as part of the Montefalco Easter programme. It was wonderful and more so in this beautiful church with its beautiful paintings and acoustics.
The cafe entrance area sells normal bar stock, but also offers the possibility to taste local olive oils.

Another wonderful experience!

In the church - museum of San Francesco in Montefalco, the walls of the apse are frescoed with 12 scenes from the life of Saint Francis.
The theme is the identification between the life of the Saint and that of Jesus Christ.
Frescoes are work of the Florentine artist Benozzo Gozzoli, who worked here since 1450, and they have nothing to envy to the most famous cycle of frescoes on the life of Saint Francis present in the upper basilica of Assisi.

Amazing church and museum. For 10 Euros per person you can buy a ticket that gets you into a dozen different museums in Umbria. We also visited the one in Bevanga and Trevi on the same day. Beautiful Old Church and a wonderful museum with paintings, statues, and other artifacts.

The highlight of this Museum are the frescoes depicting the life of St Francis of Assisi in the Apse of the Church. The museum also has an old wine cellar where the monks would store their wine. Very peaceful and well work a visit
