Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

We had a good time during our visit learning how to pan for gold and the tour was very interesting. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, entertaining and we learned alot about the early days of gold mining in the area.

Highly recommend going out on the half day claim. It's a decent trek to the area and plan to get shoes and pants wet! Several areas to pick to dig from and it was addicting to look for those gold flakes! We found several small...More

We recently stopped in for a quick visit. The mine tour was short but interesting. The guide, I wish I could remember her name, was very sweet and knowledgeable.

As a college student, my dad and I were not sure if we'd be "too old" for the tour/learning how to pan for gold. Fortunately, Big Thunder is awesome for all ages and we had a really great time! Our tour guide, Liz, was incredible....More

I really liked this place. It was interesting and the staff were really friendly. I’d recommend booking ahead in peak season. Give gold panning a try too as that was fun.

Hands down the best experience. My 10 year old loved the tour, panning and the gift shop. Tiffany was a great, informative and patient tour guide. She took her time, explained everything and answered every question. I highly recommend going to Big Thunder Gold Mine.
