Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

They have you panning for gold in raised beds alongside the stream. Didn't see anybody with even a small amount of gold flecks. We were disappointed. Won't return.

Did you look at the board with all of activities on the board when you came in. The claim panning is panning in the stream. That was one of the choices. We guarantee gold in both experiences. Did you find gold?.if not you needed to come to us and we would have made sure you had yours. I am sorry... More

Wife found brochure somewhere, so we took our granddaughters there while on Mt. Rushmore trip. It turned out much better than I expected. The staff was very genuinely friendly. Did this for my granddaughter glad we did , great history of mines and the mining process in the Black Hills very informative and educational plus she got to pan for gold. If your can bend down if your tall it is worth it. You tour the mine wearing a hard hat, a necessity for this tour.but it was very... More

We all had a great time. The tour guide was funny and did a great job keeping old and young interested and informed. And who doesn't love panning for gold. Will be stopping here again next year.

We only did the panning and was not impressed with it at all. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our two children were bored very quickly and ready to move on. It was their least favorite thing we did the entire trip. To us it was a waste of money.

My 3 children (13,9,5) and I attended the gold mine tour and then did the panning. Our tour guide, Jennifer was amazing. She was informative and helpful. My children loved it. They just wished they would have found more gold pieces.

We were on vacation in rapid city and the kids really wanted to try panning for gold. We saw this place and it was busy so we decided to try it. It was ok but for the $10 per kid that we paid, we only got a couple very tiny pieces of gold. It was an experience but a little... More

Sorry the panning did not measure up to your expectations. Each flake on the retail market is $1.00. Gold has been going up drastically in the last few months. We have tried to keep our prices the same for two years. We feel this helps the customers. You should have received 4 to 8 flakes in your panning. Could you... More
