Historic Jefferson College was the birthplace of Mississippi’s statehood in 1817. Established in 1802, the school was the first institution of higher learning chartered in the Mississippi Territory. Today, the site operates as a museum with several original buildings built between 1819 and 1839, including the East Wing, President’s House, and West Wing.

This well maintained college was built in 1817 and due to lack of attendance was closed in 1964. The empty halls give you an idea of what was a great place. You can tour the buildings and grounds and a nature trail. A great place...More

There is not to much to see at this very impressive site. They have a good visitor centre and you can get into the ground floor of only one of the other buildings. You can walk a couple of trails in the grounds. The potential...More

The buildings are all empty so even if you could go in there's nothing to see. The brochure is very light on details & I just couldn't understand why anyone would want to go here.

It is always very calming to visit Jefferson College. Again, knowing a little bit of the history of this place before visiting makes you appreciate it much more and understand the culture of that time.

It is an old college, but it has definitely seen better days. It's a nice stop for the history, but that is honestly about it.

You can tour the grounds and buildings free of charge. This site was used as West Point in the TV miniseries The North and South staring Patrick Swazye.
