Interesting place

If you're into local history this is a must see! Great architecture and stories about the people who once resided there.

My nephew and I went on this tour together, he's 10 and was completed hooked. We loved the audio that went with the tour so rooms and the history could be explained as you took the tour. They also have deals where you can use your ticket to get into 2 other museums in the area at a reduced cost.... More

Came to Goderich to see this but it wasn't open. It was closed for season but had a sign saying open Nov 6 1-4:30 by donation. Came back next day to see it again but myself and others waited but still did not open. Not sure what happened but I know I was not the only one trying to see... More

Both the museum and jail can be viewed by purchasing a joint ticket for both. Very good audio guide. Having read the Stephen Truscott Story I found it interesting that he was first jailed here. Attached is the prison governors house- worlds apart from the prison.

A jail built in an octagon shape. From the admittance area to the judges chamber on the top floor. Attached is the stately Governors house. Summertime it hosts "Behind the bars" which volunteers give you some of the history.

We read about the Gaol in one of the Goderich tourism rags and decided to visit on a lark. We weren't disappointed in what we found. The self-guided tour is enhanced by the handheld audio device. We visited on a day when we were the only visitors, which added to our enjoyment immensely. We could take our time and read... More

This nineteenth century edifice is a fascinating place to visit. You actually are advised to start your visit on the third floor and work your way down through the cells, early warden's chambers, prisoner's day rooms, outside recreational yard and finally into the 'governors's' residence. Hard to believe that a fifteen year old Steven Truscott was held in one of... More

Take time for a quiet walk just after sunset. Watch the beavers swimming in the river below you. See the salmon that eludes the fisherman's hook.

Decided to try a quick visit as we have always been interested in local sites when traveling. The museum runs self guided as well as audio tours. It takes about an hour but you get a very good presentation of jail life 150 years ago. The highlight of the visit is a tour through the Governor's House attached. The house... More

This restored prison is an important part of history, it shows that someone was thinking about prison life and how it could be improved, and how to improve the safety of the guards. As we went through this prison we were both sadden to see the harsh conditions and how many prisoners were actually mentally unfit, or destitute, or even... More
