Awesome public beach. Not very crowded. Beware of the big waves--called 'break neck beach" for a reason. Saw 2 turtles swimming in the ocean!

Beautiful
Jul 2021 • Couples
We loved this beach (Big Beach). It’s big so you weren’t crammed in with all the other people like some of the other beaches in Maui. The was lots of sandy area to play. The waves were good to play in but not so strong that you couldn’t safely go in with teens and pre-teens. We went with our kids (7, 11, 13). The beach is beautiful. Parking is easy and is available in several spots as the beach has several entry areas.. There may be facilities at the main parking area but only porta-potties at the other parking areas.

Big waves!
Jul 2021
Beautiful beach. We went early in the morning, around 7am. Only a few people were there. I would say the beach is not for swimming for beginners or for just lounging around in the water. The waves are huge and intimidating. But if you are looking for a nice, clean beach to just sit in the sand this is the place for you.

Awesome public beach

A great beach to visit if you want a change from your resort beach. The water is much more blue than Polo or Wailea. Very long with moderate waves.

"Big Waves"
Jun 2021
Makena Beach is very long and wide. No problem finding beach space. Parking is a problem, very small lot so might have to park along street outside and hike in. One very good taco truck in lot. The waves were very large with big riptides. Strong swimmers only, but nice beach for lounging/sunbathing.

6 weeks in a cast at the beginning of summer now

A giant wave slammed 3 of us like a log was hitting us. One of us dislocated her hip, one badly bruised his ribs, and I broke my arm in 2 places. Those 2 also whacked their heads REALLY hard. Be VERY careful here! This happened when we were about ten feet from the shoreline. We had no idea that this was nicknamed "break-neck beach" and there was no indication that it was so dangerous.

Pretty beach but huge waves - not recommended for swimming or for little kids
Jun 2021
This was my least favorite beach on Maui because of the huge waves. I think it's dangerous. As we were in the water the first time we came, a wave picked me up and tossed me around like a rag doll. My head was smashed into the ground and I heard a crack but thankfully there were no broken bones.
My teenage boys and my husband would give this 5 stars. They had a blast, even though they kept getting pummeled. We came here a second day for more punishment and the waves were 10-12 feet high. Any my crazy boys (husband included) took them on again. My daughter and I just waded in the waves that washed up on shore and even those would sometimes make you lose your footing.
It is beautiful but that's the only positive I can say about it.
You have to pay to park. I told my husband we shouldn't be paying to get pummeled by the ocean, lol. Definitely not a beach for little kids.

Nice big beach.

Nice big beach so room to spread out. Waves could be a bit rough. Parking lot fills up but seems like parking along road might not be a problem.

An excellent place to swim and snorkel
May 2021
The sand is great, the water isn't too rough, there are some fish to see, the views are great, and it's Maui. What's not to like?

There are several beaches in Makena. We went to two - one had showers and restrooms, the other only had porta-potties (the southernmost beach I believe). Otherwise they were comparable. They weren't very crowded, and although they're a bit off the beaten path, they're really not all that far from Kihei.

2 enthusiastic thumbs up!
