Paz de las Aves has a couple of enormous advantages - the first being a Cock of the Rock Lek and the other is that they spearheaded the hand feeding of Antpittas, allowing birders to see birds like Giant Antpitta for the first time. Despite...More

Our tour group (eight birders) was told in advance what to expect, and still we were amazed. Our visit started before dawn as we made the short hike to the Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek. Watch you head in the blind if you're tall. The screaming cocks-of-the-rock...More

Please improve the road to your lodge. We got up at 5 am to view the Cock of the Rock and could not access you due to the poor condition of the road.

Some days it is worth getting up before daybreak, and this was one of them. The sun was just beginning to go up when we pulled up by the side of the dirt road and met Mr Angel Paz, conservation hero extraordinaire, who created a...More

Started at the Cock-of-the-Rock bird lookout at 6:00 in the morning. The trees became alive with males strutting. If you've never seen this flashy bird before, you are for a treat. Driving further up the road, we hooked up with Anko (Andrew) at the first...More

We are avid birders and seeing a COTR Lek was top of my list to see in Ecuador. We were at the Mashpi lodge and while there is a Lek there, the location requires a VERY hard hike through the cloud forest that has no...More

We saw 8 Coq of the Roc performing behind a copse of trees. Best to show up to the Lek viewing platform - a 200 meter walk from the road around 8AM when the males are most active, weather conditions permitting. After the "show" we...More

I came up from Quito to take advantage of the wonderful hospitality of the Paz family offered with its overnight stay package. It was raining quite hard when I arrived and so I stayed under the covered patio and watched the various humming bird species...More

Many years ago, Angel Paz, figured out how to coax antpittas in to a feeding station to take worms. Until then, these shy denizens of the mountain forest were just about impossible to see. Angel is built a modest business of showing people his beloved...More

Just as Doug mentioned these birds are present and active early in the morning only. If you go at some other time you may see other interesting birds but probably not the cock-of-the-rocks. I suggest using the service of a... More

I didn't rent a car in Ecuador, and would not have wanted to drive there. I hired a bird guide and driver, which worked well. The Cock of the Rock lek would have been a nightmare to find on my own at dawn, but the driver... More

Hi! The only real show you'd miss is the Cock-of-the-Rock display at dawn. Otherwise, the rest of the birds are around all day. If you had one of the local guides, they could help you find lots of wonderful birds, including... More
