Tairua is a town on the Coromandel Peninsular with lovely beaches. Holiday houses on Paku Drive especially those up high offer wonderful views across to Pauanui Beach and the Harbour. The town is situated on an estuary so the incoming and outgoing tides give a varied view of the tidal flats and birds found on them. Sunsets from up high... More

The walk up to the top of the mount is easy and not very long. You'll be rewarded with awesome views of Tairua and Pauanui beach, the estuary and the islands off the coast. One might even catch a glimpse of White Island...

The lookout is a short walk from the car park. There are a number of information boards about the region and its history. Many good photo stops enjoy the view over the many beaches in that region. It is well worth to walk to the top which is about 10-15 minutes from the upper car park.

Years ago I climbed this mountain and piped ontop. There is a lovely bush track and it gets steep near the summit, so physical fitness and agility would be required for that. If you follow the signs and drive to the carpark area before the bush track climb, you will see excellent views of Pauanui and Tairua, plus the hills... More

Just do it! The view is really worth the climb. The locals run up the hill as an training. And if you can't walk up in once, no problem, there are enough branches.

Amazing views from top of Paku. Surprised how many houses there are around the bays/beaches that you see from top only.

Not that much effort for a big reward. Sensational views well worth the walk and a 360 degree photo if you can manage it.

Mount Paku (pronounced Paaku) is the iconic hill in Tairua that gives the visitor breathtaking views. You can see both ocean beaches of Tairua and Pauanui, plus the Coromandel Ranges. You can climb from the bottom to the top or simply take your car to within 10 minutes of the top and climb from there. You won't be disappointed.
