Really? Flames continually burning in a forest for over 90 years - why doesn't it burn down? See for yourself the extraordinary sight of dancing flames, fed by a natural gas seep, surrounded by lush ferns and ancient beech trees. Have ‘billy tea’ and pancakes cooked over the flames. Half-day trip includes two hour guided walk, 4WD transport and a visit to a working deer farm in a beautiful valley full of oil prospecting history.

Small tour groups (5 or 6 people) ensure every body feels included. At no time did Steve, our guide and host, seem like he was reading from a script . He really knew what he was talking about. It was a lovely calm bush walk with...More

We should pay people like you to come on our trips! You two were so enthusiastic and I'm sure the whole of Nelson will hear about our activity which is on their doorstep. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed learning about the natural surroundings and just being out in the bush. Not everyone thinks the walk is easy, as you did, but most find it well worth the effort!

The Natural Flames Experience was a great trip! Walking through authentic New Zealand beech forest to a unique site. The Natural Flames must be one of the best-kept secrets of the South Island! Our guide Steve took great care of us, made some delicious pancakes...More

This was a side tour from our program and certainly worth the effort. Strange to see flames just burning from the soil. Great walk to the flames and our guide was very informative about various aspects of the local environment. Pancakes cooked over the flames...More

Awesome! Glad you had such a good time (apart from the sandfly bites!) They seem to bite when you are about to enter the bush, but once you're in the bush, and at the Flames, they aren't present, luckily.

We really enjoyed the 4WD/bush walk with our guide Steve. Steve and his wife were kind enough to reschedule the trip from the morning (very, very wet!!) to the afternoon (only slightly wet!!) In fact the rain enhanced the experience with the moss covered forest...More

Thank you for your lovely review of the Flames trip. It's good to get out into nature, not worrying about a little bit of rain! Surreal is a good description of the strangeness of arriving to a campfire that is already burning.
