The desert in August shouldn't be lush but thanks to the unusual amount of rain we've had this year, that's just what it seems like. Wild grasses, flowers and cacti blooming against all odds. Fabulous! Overcast skies and breezes made for an unexpectedly comfortable day...More

Gates Pass may be just a pull over parking lot for some, but to gaze at its total beauty and scenic views is truly a must when visiting Tuscon. Saguaro cactuses by the thousands on hilly terrain with mountains on two sides, definitely bring a camera....More

Gates pass has the most beautiful look out points along a winding narrow road. Mountains and cactus are all around you. A must see for photos breath taking views every where you look. Good for small hikes, there are trails.

We always stop on the way to the Sonora Desert Museum. A great date is stopping at Gates Pass on the way to "Cool Summer Nights" at the Desert Museum. Gates Pass is other-worldly and spiritual. If you love saguaros, you'll swoon!

If you want to get started with the Sonoran Desert, this is the perfect spot. After a simple drive up the mountain (on Speedway going east), traversing a majestic forest of saguaros, you reach the top, where you can easily park (even with facilities). I...More

Spectacular saguaros and a great sunset view, but don't expect solitude, and it was spoilt a little for us by the noisy drones.

At the top of the pass is a nice parking lot. Looks like paths go out several directions.

If you travel from Interstate 10 up Speedway towards gates pass you'll be okay. Just do not pass the parking lot at gate pass. The road is extremely curvy after that and the drop-off is tremendous.
