Short tour of the custom house

Very good tour guide gave us an interesting overview of life of the sailors and traders. No fee and short tours but good.

We just happened upon this place as we were walking down the roads in Salem. It was very quaint and full of history and wonderful artifacts. It is smaller on the inside, couldn't go upstairs, so it can get crowded pretty quickly, but you definitely should stop by and visit it. Talk with the rep. there, ours gave us stories... More

Got a great FREE tour by booking at the visitor center. Really knowledgeable and friendly tour guide from the Parks Department.

Visited Salem on a wet day in October and decided to visit the Custom House. Brilliant engagement from guide - very informative. View out the front door to the sea is amazing and to imagine how things used to be is really interesting. They bring it all to life really well.

The House is huge but you only get to see the lower 3 rooms due to renovations. Our guide was wonderful and full of information

Stately offices of the old Custom House face the sea and evoke thoughts of what it must have been like to have to pass through here documenting cargo from afar. The office rooms have loads of artifacts in them and there is a lot of written and pictorial information about the functioning of the place. Free and enlightening!

So interesting to see what the old clipper ships carried in their holds and delivered to Salem to merchants for resale. Love learning history this way! We were fortunate that it was open as we came by and we stopped in for a quick history lesson. Parks Dept. employees were very helpful and knowledgeable. Recommend visiting here!

This was really cool to see. Unfortunately they were doing some restorations and we couldn't go upstairs but the guide there was super nice.

Fun and free. Worth checking out, and reading the history and seeing the antiquated machinery used for merchants purchasing goods. There are some stairs, so keep that in mind upon visiting.
