A simple phone call to the fly fishing shop can answer that question. For me, catch and release is the only way I trout fish with three exceptions. First, if the trout waters are stocked and the water temperatures eventually get too high at some part of the year to sustain them, I will consider taking the trout. Second, the trout has been injured in a way that it will die. Or third, the trout are needed for streamside lunch or dinner, and removing the trout do not endanger existing trout populations (I avoid this if at all possible except in remote regions). None of these conditions existed during my guided trip in March. To me, there is nothing more beautiful than hooking a trout, and after gently landing and removing the hook, seeing it swim off to fight another day in habitat that sustains its life year round.
