In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

You cannot go to Newport without visiting at least one mansion,. First timers, the Breakers is a MUST!! A close second is the Servants Tour at The Elms.. On a nice day, a walk behind The Breakers --called The Cliffwalk-- is a great way to unwind and enjoyt Newport.

Take a step back in time and enjoy some wonderful history. The mansions are impeccable and give you a glimpse into the life of the upper crust back in the day. If you are a Downton Abbey fan, then the mansion tours are a must do. The self guide tours are great and a wonderful way to tour the homes.... More

My sister and I recently visited the Newport Mansions, the Elms, Breakers and Rosecliff. Simply stunning. The Elms has a servants behind the scenes tour that was great. Jill was our escort. Very nice and knowledgeable. At Rosecliff we met George Holland. He was awesome. Had a lot of knowledge about all the mansions. He was a great help and... More

Go to the visitor's center first to purchase tickets, or buy them at the mansions separately. I bought a 3 house package and it never expires, so despite having a change in plans and only seeing 2 out of 3, I can go back next year and see the 3rd without paying again. Each house has parking available, but it... More

We visited the mansions decorated for Christmas/Holidays and they are stunning! Live music and/or live singing would have made the experience extra special. Also, a complimentary candy, cookie or beverage at the end of the tour would have been nice and may have given us the extra energy needed to shop in the mansion gift shops. Overall, the tours of... The mansions are spectacular! Toured the Vanderbilt - interesting to learn the history of the mansion and the family. There are others to tour which we did t have a chance to do. Another must see while you're in Newport.

At least once a year we take an afternoon to visit at least three of the mansions. It is amazing to see how rich people lived more than 100 years ago in their summer cottages. Priceless artifacts, furniture, art and interior designs. Well worth a day of exploring.

We visited here - 4 mansions - using the Winter Passport package from the Preservation Society. The mansions were all decorated with authentic Victorian Christmas ornaments, toys, trees, wreaths, poinsettias - and more! Using the audio and ipad self-guided tour gave great insight and anecdotes for each of the rooms. I especially was impressed with how nicely each of the... More
