Overview
More
In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

It's a tourism truism in Newport that first-time visitors to the island must visit the tremendous Gilded Age mansions on Bellevue Avenue. That's absolutely correct. They all, as much as they tend to blend into one another if you visit more than two on a...More

We loved touring all the mansions in Newport. They are all nearby and very different. I would recommend walking shoes for the tours!

No matter which one of the mansions you visit, you won't be disappointed. My first visit to a mansion was in 1962 and I have continued to enjoy them over the years.. Don't limit yourself to visiting just one mansion as they all have something...More

If you are visiting Newport, RI in the winter you will find that there are very few crowds. During this magical time 3 of the gilded mansions are decked out for the holidays. Every room has a Christmas tree that is something you would see...More

The audio tapes are fantastic and I love the behind the scenes stories from the employees / servants! Going at our own pace really made it fantastic! Well Done Newport HIstorical Society - sadly we only visited one place but we will return!

They say these "mansions" (understatement) are mansions; however, I call them palaces that rival those of Europe. In fact they are modeled after some of them in Italy and France, especially. I enjoyed The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff and The Breakers and high tea in...More

There's no need for advance purchase, as they'll keep selling for as long as the buildings are open. But, as others have pointed out, the crowds on the weekend leave much to be desired (and navigated). If you really... More
