The Newport Art Museum's collections and exhibitions reflect Rhode Island's rich cultural heritage and lively contemporary art scene. We are the only museum to focus on the art and artists of Rhode Island, both historic and contemporary. The Museum is housed in the John N.A. Griswold House and the Cushing Gallery. Home for the Museum since 1916, the Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark and an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Designed in 1862 by architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was completed in 1864 for John N.A. Griswold, a China trade merchant and financier, and his wife Jane. Griswold House was Hunt’s first major commission in Newport and is the premier example of American Stick Style architecture. Hunt went on to design many of the grand cottages of Newport’s Gilded Age, including The Breakers, Marble House, and Ochre Court. To honor artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, an early member of the Newport Art Association, the Association erected the Cushing Gallery in 1920.The Newport Art Museum is one of only 5% of American museums to be fully accredited by the American Association of Museums.

A lovely collection of Rhode Island art housed in a beautiful old building and purpose built gallery. A real find away from the overpopulated mansions tours. Modestly priced as well.

The variety of disciplines was surprising. Art glass, oil, wood, if it is creative, enjoy it. The interior is a beautiful background for historical and modern pieces. There is a small sculpture garden. Disappointed I missed an installation that was in progress in building 2....More

What a beautiful building for the art museum! Loved the history and the wood work inside this museum along with beautiful artwork! It was small but also loved that it contains artwork from some local Newport natives. The additional building with the exhibit of photos...More

Nice art museum that has early American pieces. If you like American art this is a must see museum. Nice place to spot in while visiting the mansions on Bellevue Avenue.

I was most impressed by the exhibition of local water colorists's work, as well as by the turn-of-the-20th-century gallery of one local artist that is the foundation of the museum's collection. But I expected more, especially in Newport.

Small but quaint museum in an old mansion. There was a gallery of watercolors from a local competition which had some beautiful pieces!!

The Newport Museum is housed in the Griswold House by R.M. Hunt. The museum is housed in two buildings. It has a great collection of regional art. When looking at the art, don't overlook the house details.

Historically, the house was beautiful and safe from modern renovations. Gallerys were a bit lack luster but enjoyable

Only the 2nd Thursday of the month from 5pm-8pm. Otherwise I believe it's $10 an adult.
