The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

Great Stop but be prepared to walk and for heat!

This is a must see and often missed site! It is beautiful and gives you a unique view! It is very hot though. You will want good walking shoes and water!

This place is very peaceful. You can drive up here very easily. Only takes a short time to see. You take as much time as you want, not a" toury" thing

Wished we could have visited the graves, but were told they tried to let people disembark the bus, but people were carving their initials into the trees, so had to stop.

A must see to understand the War in the Pacific and all who died, especially those aboard ships. The cemetery is one of several US National Cemeteries around the world that memorialize men and women who died and their remains were never recovered. The entire war is illustrated and explained in the huge panels in the memorial located at the... More

I have been here before but this time there was a sign that said they didn't want people in buses getting out. There is so much to see that you can't see from a bus. Beautiful place.

If you like cemeteries, and I do, this is a wonderful place to spend an hour or two walking around. It encouraged me to remember the people who paid the bill for the freedoms I enjoy today. It is a solemn location and it was moving to me to think about the incredible sacrifices made by our fellow citizens on... More

Again, this is worthy to visit to get a sense of the sacrifice the men and women of the armed forces have given to protectour freedom.

Our deep attachment to this monument is likely in part due to the honoring of a family member, POW from Korean War. However, it is a place of peace and education, beautifully maintained. One cannot help but be moved being there and honoring our fallen heroes.
