Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

This is a light to moderate trail. You can take a leisure stroll on the paved trail which ends with a scenic view of the lighthouse. If you are fortunate, you may see a whale in the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean. Be sure to bring your camera, water and sunscreen.

this hike was quite easy for beginners.. Safe for all ages.. the road is paved. I took a group of friends who where visiting Hawaii for the first time and wanted to show them a view that was breathtaking but not hard to get to.... the view at the top was amazing... just magical...

A nice uphill walk on a tarmac surface and you're greeted with amazing views of Oahu's east coast. The tarmac does take the feeling of a true hike away from the trail, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. We also saw a lot of families with strollers, so if you've a small family - no problem! Before/after taking in the Lighthouse Trail,... More

We visited this location by bus from Waikiki. The Bus stops at the Sea Life Centre, which is the stop past the entrance to the park. This meant a 15 minute walk back up the hill along the side of the road to get to the entrance to the trail. So we were nicely "warmed up" before starting our hike.... More

Take water and head covering for there is very little shade. Great views from summit. It is taxing for the very young and older hikers. As two 75 year old females we rested quite a few times going up.

Arrived in the late afternoon to a partially full lot. The portajohns were pretty messy. The stroll up the paved path, probably a mile or so, was good with breezes off the ocean on most of the climb. Carried snacks in my hydration pack and found a good view to rest and recharge. Great views all around.

This is a well-done public trail that allows for kids, strollers, and elderly that need a bit of a solid surface to assist in getting to the lighthouse, a great viewing platform. The parking everywhere in Honolulu is a nightmare, and so is this site. The good maintenance and popularity contribute to the lot (far too small) being mostly full... More

The hike is easy (although it is uphill going up) and spectacular. Go near sunset and you can watch the sun go down AND the moon rise. The pure ocean air fills your lungs. No miss!

This is a great hike for young and old. It takes about 40 to 50 minutes to reach the Light House. I would suggest you bring water when you reach the top for a short break.

Great easy relatively short hike with magnificent views over ocean! Easy drive from Honolulu if you have a car or take bus - just make sure to check schedules.
