Row upon row of mainly unidentified Union soldiers this cemetery has not had the grass cut in a long time , making the graves disappear. Having visited many other National cemeteries, they are much better taken care of. Perhaps because it is no longer open...More

Disappointed in the appearance. It is not being maintained like other national cemeteries. Don't need to drive through this as you go through the park.

It was very moving walking among the graves of union soldiers. Sad, and at the same time, peaceful. It's a sad reminder of the fight to keep our country together.

Very large National Cemetary adjacent to the Vicksburg battlefield. We were there just before Memorial Day and all the graves were decorated with American flags. Really brings to life the reality of how many men lost their life in the Vicksburg battle.

Nothing big attraction wise, other than the number of people who died. Mostly Northern soldiers and it didn't explain why.

Made very interesting by the fact I ran into a lady there who makes her living doing tombstone rubbing! In spite of the size of most military graveyards, she actually has lists of specific individuals who died at various battlefields and searches out their tombstones...More

The cemetery is located right next to the Cairo Museum.. I just walked over and walked around the cemetery although you can drive it also. So many unknown grave sites marked by little head stones. Worth the visit to pay respects for their service.

We just drove thru grass very high. Needs a good mowing to be able to see more monuments. Beautiful cemetery area though and should not be missed even if just driving through.

I'm glad I got to see this while touring Vicksburg Battlefield. The cemetery is beautiful. You get a idea what happen in Vicksburg. You also understand how big the battle was in the Civil War.

Is there a way to get inside the Illinois Monument without climbing the 47 steps? Is one side built into a hill so it's actually ground level, or is there an elevator or a ramp? I can't do steps very well any more but would like to be able to read my greatx3 grandfather's name on the tablets inside.

No........Sorry! And it is a lot of steps. This hillside is steep and not recommended. Wish you could do it though! Really amazing.
