You can see how the world famous moon stones are mined here and you might be able to buy some moon stones. Several kilometers away from Ambalangoda.

Visited the mine as part of a trip with Aitken Spence Travels. Not sure of the validity of the mining process as past or present but it was interesting. Then saw some of the painstaking labour into cutting, shaping, shining and setting of stones. Then...More

Was all about you buying the gems at end of tour. The men working the mine look exhausted and under feed. Very hard labour. At the end they show you them making the jewelry. I must say has turned me of jewelry as only a...More

Unless your switched onto moonstones , then only average attraction. They show a demo mine. With some gravel being washed including some rough moonstone in it. Lots of jewelry demo as part of visit. Selling not too hard though.

Although it was cool to see so many stones, the woman who gave the tour was less than interested and very pushy about us buying things in the end. Wouldn't recommend.

Little to see all rather contrived .l felt sorry for the poor old chap who had to turn over a spade full of gravel as a tourist walked past. The gems are over priced and the staff pushy?

Do not buy anything, they sell fakes - probably more so to tourists who they hope to never see again. This behaviour is a real shame for the tourist industry in Sri Lanka and I hope the Government will act upon their dishonest behaviour. Make...More

Nice little informative place but the pompous guy showing us around was very pushy and seemed annoyed that we didn't buy his 'jewels' for $400...!!!! I bought the kids a (doubtful) moonstone that cost $220 but have a feeling I was ripped off.
