Informative Cooking Class
Mar 2020
We participated in the cooking class and garden tour at Ella Spice Garden and would highly recommend this activity to others looking to spend an afternoon preparing a traditional Sri Lankan meal.

Our hosts communicated well with us, kept us engaged in the cooking class and lead us in the preparation of two curries, dahl and coconut sambol. We were all encouraged to participate and although this is more of an observational class rather than an immersive participatory cooking class, we feel that the instructions given during the class along with the notebook provided to jot down recipes and notes, will allow us to reproduce these recipes at home.

The Spice Garden shop is also open at the end of the meal which gave us a great opportunity to purchase ingredients that are difficult to procure once home.

Cooking in nice atmosphere with funny guy that explains a lot about spices and the way you use it in the Sri Lankan kitchen. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

Fun cooking class and interesting spice garden visit
Feb 2020
We enjoyed a visit to the Spice Garden Ella in Feb 2020. The garden itself was small but interesting. The standalone fee per person was 200 rupee. If you book the cooking class (2000 rupee per person), the spice garden is included. The cooking class is between 5pm-8pm at the residence on the same property as the garden. Approx 7-9 people are in the class. We found it fun, largely due to the excellent humour of the host/teacher. Everyone had a turn because there were no individual cooking stations. I would say a group of 9 is too big for this kitchen but I appreciate they want to make the venture profitable. We produced 4 curries and they were all delicious. It was lovely to sit down together and enjoy the meal at the end of the class.

So much fun, informative and delicious lesson!

This was a great experience! We loved the cooking class. Our teacher was so hilarious, putting everyone at ease, with a real dry sense of humour. He got everyone involved in the class.
First a tour of the garden to see the ingredients growing.
We made different kinds of curry - personal favourite the garlic curry and the lentil daal. Of course at the end of the lesson you get to sit down together and eat all the amazing food you’ve worked on.
Couldn’t recommend this experience more!

Observing not cooking!
Jan 2020
Firstly, I thought the host was a nice chap - he was well spoken and took the time to answer questions. Also, the end meal was tasty and there was plenty of it to go around.

However, that's where the positivity stops I'm afraid. We spent 3.5 hours standing around a single workstation in a mosquito infested kitchen, watching him cook whilst 8 people took turns doing very rudimentary tasks, such as peeling garlic, taking it in turns to stir a single pot, and writing pointless repetitive numbers in a booklet, which I can only assume was to try and distract us from the lack of cooking (it didn't work).

Really not sure how this gets such positive reviews - I can only assume those people who liked it have never actually partaken in a proper cooking class before, where you get to.... cook.

Informative and fun!
Dec 2019
We loved the cooking class at Ella spice garden. The chef was very funny and taught us how to cook a garlic curry, Dahl, coconut sambol and potato curry. The food was delicious and the hosts were brilliant. We brought some spices from the shop too so we can try the recipes at home. Very well thought out with a little recipe book to take home! Very good price too at 2500 each. Our only slight suggestion for improvement would be to incorporate a meat or fish dish, or explicitly advertise this as a vegetarian cooking course. Thank you for teaching us so much about Sri Lankan cooking!

Amazing class and food
Dec 2019 • Couples
Me and my bf joined the class after going through a nice tour in the garden. We were asked if we wanted to do the class and we did. It was an amazing decision! What a super nice, funny and skilled teacher we had! We learned how to do 3 types of curry, rice and coconut-chilli.mix. All adapted to the "western " taste (not so spicy) and with great tips on how to.do it in our countries!! We got a cooking book which we filled ourselves. We loved ! Super recommend!! Thank you for this knowledge , our families will love it!!
