This is a beautiful photo worthy bridge close to Ella. Tourist need to be aware of the unscrupulous tuk tuk drivers who charge aroubd 3000 rupees and promise to take you "close" to the bridge and then take a long winded route only to drop you at a random location not actually close to the bridge. I speak the local language and this still happened to us. We had to climb down a bunch of uneven steps with kids and some older family members and walk 200m in the heat along the railway line to actually get to the bridge. At the bridge we were told by the tourist police that this was a scam and there was a way more direct route down to the bridge. So please do your homework (prior to arriving near the bridge to ensure you don't get taken for a ride, literally!)

Bridges of all types has some uniqueness but Nine Arches bridge is extraordinarily fascinating as it is made with solid blocks and mortar to take all the weight of a heavy train and now hundreds of local and foreign visitors who visit to see this fascinating structure. Since it is just outside a tunnel, it is exciting to see a train appear through the tunnel or go in to it. Structure is architecturally beautiful and made to precision with ample space on the bridge to hangout and watch trains pass by.

Just a bridge but in the most beautiful setting. Impressive structure and if you time it right for a train it’s brilliant to see. Worthwhile and free attraction but apparently not for long as it’s being made a unesco site.

I like it. Adam's Big Peak is a several-hour climb, which is repulsive. We chose the small one and everything is fine with it. It turned out to take a picture, there were not too many people.

Overhyped touristic place for both locals and foreign tourists. The masses standing at the bridge and walking around all around the place are taking a lot of atmosphere out of the place that was originally a hidden gem. It's almost impossible to take a nice picture, similar to those that you can google anywhere on internet. I can imagine that the place might be a bit more interesting when there is a train passing through the bridge, almost mostly for the pictures, but I also can't imagine amount of people standing there. It must be even more as when the train is not passing, which is most of the day time.
The biggest challenge is to get to the place. I don't recommend to hike, as the road through woods is narrow and very muddy. Plus there are a lot of tuk tuks passing by. Then there is no parking place at the top of the hill under the bridge. Both cars and tuk tuks are parking on the side of the road, blocking some side roads or that main road itself. But I still think that tuk tuk is the best option how to get to the place.
The place itself is free of charge. There are few stands with grilled corn or with coconut nuts.

The walk down to the Nine Arches was delightful with some lovely views of tiered fields and rural settings. It was spoiled somewhat by rubbish left by walkers, unforgivable in my opinion. The actual bridge was not dissimilar to the Settle Carlisle bridge in the UK.
There was a bustle and sense of fun.

We were told that it was a really hard walk to get to the bridge, so we were completely surprised when it wasn't, easy walk from the intersection with the start of the little Adam's peak walk. Make sure you're there to see a train too.

The Nine Arch Bridge is truly a unique and breathtaking experience that is definitely worth witnessing. The bridge itself is a marvel of engineering and design, with its high arches spanning across a lush valley surrounded by verdant trees and tea fields. As you make your way across the bridge, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the distant mountains, making it an unforgettable sight.
One of the best ways to experience the Nine Arch Bridge is by taking a train journey through the hills and valleys of Sri Lanka. The train ride is a wonderful opportunity to sit back, relax, and soak in the scenery as you wind your way through the hills and forests. As the train approaches the bridge, the anticipation builds, and once you're on the bridge, you'll feel like you're walking on air as you take in the magnificent views.
Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Nine Arch Bridge to anyone who appreciates natural beauty, engineering feats, or simply wants to experience something truly unique and unforgettable. It's a must-visit destination that will leave you awestruck and inspired, and it's definitely worth the journey.

Здравствуйте! Как добираться до моста с дороги, если едешь на байке?
Oksana S

Hi there, Is it possible to get a place to stay with a nine arch view?

Yes, there are lots of guest houses on the hill and a few villas. I believe one of them is called nine arch view.

Thinking about holiday in Sri Lanka, where we are going with two children I would like to ask if it is necessary to travel with travel agency (with think it could be too demanding for children to see all places planned by travel agency, also it is more expensive) Is it easily possible to get to such a places like 9 arch bridge or elephant orphanage, some tea plantation, or other sightseeing by train / rent a car ? Is it safe and easy to travel by train? What about roads and traffic signs? Also what about beaches? Is it safe to find some lonely, not crowded beach? Thank you very much

I want to see this place but my family includes kids with ages 4, and 7. Do we need to hike to see this place ?

No need to hike. The easiest and fastest way to reach there as follows.
Take a van and travel towards to "Haliela" (On Badulla main road) and there is a Sign board with 9 arch bridge on your right side. Take that road you can reach very close to the location. There are car park you can park your vehicles and 5 minutes walk from there. If you are lucky, you can hire TUK TUK from car park, there a no walking at all to the bridge.

Hi, what I would recommend is to take your scooter up to the Newburgh green tea factory in town. just slightly after it take a left turn off the main road, then stay left at the fork and drive down as far as yiu can go and walk from there. it's a steep road but nothing you can't manage. there are a few simple cafes on the way that will show you walking trails less than 5 min walk to the bridge.
