Well worth crossing the country for, it really is the Machu Pichu of the west! The site is accessible by good footpaths to the top, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. One would definitely regret not making the effort to visit this place.

Antiquity city, dating back to tracians, unfortunately underwent full destruction followed by bullish tries for conservation. Big potential to be unleashed. Entry comes for €3

Perperikon is situated on the top of a mountain at approx.15 km from the small town of Kardzali. It is a small Thracian stone fortress, probably used as a control point but also as a sacred place. There must be about 30 min from the road on a mountain path to get up. The top view is very spectacular.

The legend has it that high in the mountains stood the shrine of the Thracian God Dionysus—the site where Alexander the Great received the phrophecy that he would rule the world..... Worth buying the site map from the little man near the ticket office.

You have to see it to believe it. This is a great, magical old Thracian city with rich history and beautiful surroundings. The persistent work of archeologists pays off and new discoveries are being revealed literally every year. Last year's find is the base of an entire basilica built by the Romans. Hire a guide and they will take you... More

We enjoyed the scenery coupled with the way of life of our ancestors. Interesting stone carved water supplies, chairs, pool and more. On the way I noticed a split in two rock that reminded me of the one Moses ran water from. If your imagination is working can see more things.

It's amazing this place was un-earthed only in 2000, but it has been there for thousands of years. It is absolutely fascinating how well preserved it is, and how people built things like that from heavy stones so many years ago. The place is becoming a little too popular almost, which hopefullly will raise funds and awareness for its preservation,... More

This archeological site is definitely a highlight for those interested in Balkan history back to the Thracian period. We had a sizeable group so we paid for a tour guide who pointed out elements of interest that are not obvious, but you can do a self guided walk. The access paths have been constructed recently and were well maintained. The... More
