The Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a 13 1/2-mile journey from the harbour...

The Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a 13 1/2-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. We are recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest railway company in the world, being founded in 1832. We still build steam locomotives and carriages in our own workshops and the world's oldest steam engine, Prince, is still in regular use today - more than 150 years after it was built. Our historic trains climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round horseshoe bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunnelling through it.

The Welsh Highland is Snowdonia's newest railway. Trains start their spectacular 25 mile scenic journey from beneath the historic castle walls at Caernarfon. The trains - hauled by the world's most powerful narrow gauge steam locomotives - climb from sea level to over 650 feet on the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass - voted the most beautiful spot in the UK by the National Trust - and on to Porthmadog.

Travel from Caernarfon to Porthmadog via Beddgelert and back / or from Porthmadog to Ffestiniog and back. Both journeys are beautiful but different experiences, Harking back to earlier times, though historically the lines were developed for goods not passengers. On board snacks and a buffet car. Limited number of services per day- single track line. You can break your journey... More

Took the return trip from Porthmadog to Caernarfon on Sunday. It was amazing. The scenery was superb made better by the weather. Facilities at Porthmadog Station are excellent. Arrive early to buy your ticket as service is a bit slow and the train goes promptly. Online booking unavailable at time of writing. Not very busy when we traveled so able... More

Definitely, the best steam trip I have been on (and the North Yorkshire Moors takes some beating). Took the 10.05 Sunday service and it was very quiet. The team on the train took orders for coffee etc. and delivered to our seat which was a novelty. They were really helpful, telling us about different areas of the route and landmarks... More

Hi Deborah, I am sorry you had a disappointing day and did not manage to get your train ride. Was it the Welsh Highland Railway that you wished to travel on? I think that there may have been some confusion. In Porthmadog there is The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways which run trains from Porthmadog to Caernarfon and there is... More

We travelled on the Welsh Highland Railway during our recent holiday. We took the train from Porthmadog to Beddgelert with our 2 year old son and Labrador. The staff were wonderful! So helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. The train ride and scenery was awesome even though it was cloudy. My son thought it was fascinating! He now... More

Both railways are well worth a visit for both the trains and the scenery - not many places in the UK where you can see a train going along the main street!
