    Travel JFK to Manhattan
Used air train to Jamaica then subway. Excellent. About 45 minutes to Penn station. About ÂŁ7 each. Subway was anywhere for ÂŁ2. Just tap in/tap out. Compare taxi/uber $85 for 2. Beware of bars/restaurants at JFK. 2 glasses of Sauvignon blanc $65 including tip!!!!!

SKY then SUB to 42nd… Quite Convenient Fast (Guaranteed Traffic Jam Avoidance)
I arrived later (early in the morning). I refused to take a car into Manhattan after listening to my wife’s ordeal. I took the train to Jamaica. LIRR was a bit confusing as to where I needed to go, so jumped in the A Train. Sky Train, clean, fast and efficient. Eight bucks is fairly reasonable price. I took the subway to 42nd Street. I think it was $2.75 or so. Less than 10. I think taxi is about 72 bucks with 20 percent tip, so you do the math. Taxi (or uber) is a lot more private and relaxing. But most times Sky and Sub are OK.

So much cheaper than a car service
Caught a 4:45 am LIRR at Penn Station (entrance is 7th Ave & 33rd St) to Jamaica. Lots of NYPD at the station so I felt super safe being there so early in the morning. Sat near the front of the train, maybe the 3rd car. When we got out at Jamaica the escalator to the Airtrain was near. Lots of signage to guide you. Didn’t wait too long for the air train. It took us about an hour door to door. So much better and cheaper than a car to the airport. There’s lot of construction around JFK.

    Clean and efficient
Aways got a cab from JFK to midtown but last time it turned into a ride too far. Everything is expensive for Brits but with the traffic worse than ever, we paid just above and below ÂŁ100 each way. As we were staying near Penn Station, this was an deal opportunity to get the Air Train then the LIRR. Well signposted at JFK, the Air Train is something like every 7 minutes. Clean and efficient, no issues. It's contactless and you pay when you get to Jamaica. Credit card didn't work but debit card did. $8.50 I think. The train goes in a loop around the Terminals, I think T7 was the penultimate stop.

    Economy and comfort
This connection service is free of uber and expensive taxis, in addition to providing a congestion-free journey, making 25 minutes to the center of Manhattan. We choose to take the airtrain to Jamaica Station, and then take the train to Grand Central. But instead of the train you can take the subway line E.

Convenient and fast. It connects NEW YORK JFK airport to the Jamaica Station subway stop (which will then take you to Manhattan) in just a few minutes.
If you are traveling as a couple or with other people it is convenient to purchase the 10-trip ticket, it costs only 25 dollars instead of 8.25 dollars each way.

There are multiple ways to get out of JFK airport but the Airtrain represents a convenient and cost-effective means. Signs for the Airtrain are posted throughout the airport so it’s easy to find after you get off your plane. You can access it from any terminal. It’s important to note, if you ride the green line (Howard Beach Route) all the way to the Howard Beach Station, you cannot exit the station without paying $8.25 (plus the cost of the subway card itself). To avoid that price, you could get off one stop sooner at Lefferts Boulevard and pay less than $3 for the transfer then get a local bus to the Howard Beach Station to get the train into Brooklyn and Manhattan. Depending on when you ride, taking the Airtrain from JFK into the city can be over an hour. When you compare it to calling an Uber or Lyft, which can take about 45 minutes and cost upwards of $75, the choice is clear.

The Air Train is probably the best way to get to the airport terminals as you can ride the train from nearby subway and LIRR stations. Like the London Docklands Light Railway and Vancouver Skytrain these are driverless so I would recommend getting to the front of the train so you can get a driver's eye view of your journey. Always fun no matter what your age is.

The sky train serves Jamaica station which has trains from the Long Island Rail Road and also the subway with lines E, J and Z serving Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. This station is linked to Jamaica.

The sky train also serves Howard Beach where A train stops going from Manhattan and Brooklyn to Rockaway Beach.

The trains run on an elevated section so it is nice to whizz along and see the cars below crawling along ;)

I visited in October 2023 and trains were serving terminals 8, 7, 5 and 4. There is also an internal train which runs around in a loop.

With many people arriving and departing from New York every day all the trains I observed were busy but clean.

There are limited seats on the trains but plenty of space as many people come with cases.

Real scam.
You have to pay to access the trains at Jamaica station.
You pay $8.25 to get out and the same in the other direction.
If you are lost, we will sell you as many tickets as there are people!
You should know: only buy a single ticket of 10 entries/exits that you will use as many times as there are people without your group

The train is long to get anywhere since it stops so many places.
The cost was 15 dollar per person to Jamaica where we need the "Non airport" train into new york city. .

If only I had done a little more research, I would have realised that, although it is free to ride the AirTrain from your arrival terminal, you have to pay to leave it!

After a long international flight, with your mental capacity reduced by fatigue, watching 4 movies and eating and drinking too much, the neurones weren't all firing collectively. However, I managed to obtain the Metro card and put $10.75 on it in order to let me out of the Howard Beach AirTrain station and get on the Howard Beach A train station.

I was therefore forewarned and forearmed for the return journey and made sure I had exactly $10.75 for the A subway train and AirTrain journey to the departure terminal.

The AirTrain service is very good. This shuttle appears to be frequent, the carriages are clean and spacious, and the signage of where they are going is clear.

Wasn’t too impressed with this. The price is fine IMO. Less than ten dollars each is not exactly extortionate. However, there just weren’t enough shuttles to accommodate all the passengers. Also, some shuttles didn’t go to the airport terminals for some strange reason and this wasn’t made clear, leading to employees yelling on the platform and people nearly getting trapped behind the closing doors. I found it confusing and stressful. The airport will need to do better if it wants to tempt more people out of their cars and taxis.

The AirTrain is a very easy and fast way to get from midtown Manhattan to JFK Airport. The Long Island Railroad leaves from Penn Station and takes about 20 minutes to get to Jamaica Station ($5). From there, the AirTrain ($8) leaves every few minutes and connects to all terminals in about 15 minutes, depending on which terminal you're going to. Much cheaper than taking a taxi and you don't need to worry about getting hung up in traffic.

The air train is an easy way to get from all JFK terminals to downtown Manhattan. Use the E train connection to the downtown area from Jamaica station. Allow approx an hour for a JFK to Times Square journey.

The one huge drawback to the Air Train is the ridiculously inefficient and time consuming process of actually buying the tickets. You buy the ticket at the end of the Air Train line where you exit to get onto the subway system. Here you’ll inevitably have to join the busy crowded area right next to the exit with every other traveller fresh of a flight, all queuing to buy an exit ticket at the same time. The handful of machines don’t have an option to buy more than one ticket in a single transaction so if there are two of you in your party, you have to repeat the entire ticket selection and purchase process twice. There are staff on hand to help but you could easily be waiting 30 mins just to get a ticket to get out of the Air Train and onto the subway system.

Was at the JFK airport four times over the past two months, If you do not know JFK airport, there are multiple terminals and they are really spread out. The train is free going between terminal and the car rental area. Going to Jamaica station then there is a $18 fee. Going between the terminal and the car rental area there is a train at least every 5 minutes. easy and useful, but better signage is needed in the airport terminals to find the AirTrain. At the car rental areas, it is right there and cannot be missed.
