Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history. THE BOAT RIDE Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way. RUAKURI CAVE Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. We found the entire experience very disappointing. To be very frank, the tour is highly overrated and also expensive at NZ$ 50 per person for a 45 minute tour of the caves. Most of the 45 mins is taken up by introductions, a brief history of the caves and ownership and about the glow worms. The actual time that you... More

Reading the reviews they mention a boat ride. We had no boat ride, just a walk along a boardwalk on a guided tour that lasted about 20 min. When the lights are doused, it is quite spectacular, like looking at the stars. Guide was very knowledgeable and explained the life cycle of the worms in a very interesting way.

There are caves round the world similar to Waitomo and even better.. in my home country of England the Cheddar Caves are particularly good. However, what makes Waitomo special are the 100's of Thousands of Glowworms which seen from a small boat drifting along a subterranean lake, makes the whole adventure - "special". A vist to Waitomo is well worth... More

This is the one place if ever your in New Zealand you must go and seek out totally mind blowing the highlight of the tour is the boat trip at the end where the ceiling on the cave is covered in tiny glow worms. Alas the public are not allowed to take photos etc but as normal in those places... More

The $50 price tag for a tour through the Glowworm Caves is exploitive, and many will find it not worth going. But if you do go, this is what you can expect: This is a guided tour, and the guide we had was highly informative and entertaining. He kept us captivated with the details and anecdotes pertaining to the cave... More

This cave was very disappointing as there were a lot of people in the cave at the same time so you couldn't really appreciate the beauty of the gave. Seeing the glow warm via boat was pretty, up again a lot of boat traffic which took away from the experience.

Really enjoyed this. Very unique, never saw anything like this. The cave is interesting, our guide was fantastic. Was a 6th generation guide whose ancestry included the original discovers of the cave. Was extremely knowledgeable, interesting and a lot of fun. The cave tour on the boat in the dark was the highlight, can honestly say I've never seen anything... More

Very informative and easy going tour guide. The tour was good, a shame you can't take photos but I can understand why. The boat ride at the end was nice. I wouldn't recommend this tour for small children. All they seem to do is cry

Great tubing and caving with actual caving that is rough, wet, and dirty but great fun! Superb guide and refreshments underground with free photos taken by the guide.
