This walk is not as difficult or intimidating as the website makes it out to be and it's very varied, with heathland terrain at the start, some challenging ridge climbing and sulphurous lakes in the middle and semi-jungle at the end. The track is superbly maintained and the going is not in fact particularly difficult, most of the time. There... More

This was the highlight of our 1 month trip. The views are so great and the walk was very good. This is really a must do! If you want to do a 1 day trip and go by car: don't book the expensive transport but go early and park you car mangatepopo car park (west entrance) and walk until blue... More

Definitely in the top 10 treks to do in a lifetime! Views are amazing and the area is just unreal..no wonder they have used it for such a famous movie! 4 stars, not 5, simply because the amount of people on the trek was just unbelievable: I'm talking about thousands of tourists! It was really slow going in the steep... More

You should definitely do it!! It's 19,4 km and it was 6hours and 20min for us... a day before we climbed the Mt. Ruapehu, so after that it was a little bit harder, but it's quite easy... on the top of the mountain it was very-very windy, but the view and the lakes are absolutely amazing... the last 2hours are... We used Mountain Shuttle to take us to the start point of the hike, which we booked in advance. We parked in their secure carpark in the morning, and they took us to the start point at 9:30am (~30 min drive). We began our hike at 10:00am, and we finished around 3:30pm, then walked 700m back to our car. The... More

If you're looking for a single day-hike in New Zealand this should be it. Not nearly as challenging as you'd think with only 3 steep inclines over the 95% incredibly well prepared trail, the hike through active volcanic terrain is something you can't experience everywhere. The last 10km are basically an easy downhill walk over prepared gravel trails with hard... More

Did the hike in February, unfortunately the weather was not great with the day starting clear then after several hours the cloud came down and very light rain for rest of hike. We stayed at Adventure Lodge which has an excellent shuttle system. You do not need to make end of hike for a set time. You phone when at... More

This walk is amazing. Walk up the volcano, through craters, round craters, seeing the Emerald Lakes, the Blue Lake is just stunning. The colours are fantastic. It should be done when the weather is good so that the scenery can be seen. It would be such a shame to miss it. We stayed in the Tongariro Holiday Park/ Basecamp. A... More

We were extremely lucky that the weather had cleared up on the day we had chosen to do this hike. I do advised booking shuttles earlier as there were a huge number of people doing this hike at the same time. Earlier during the day is better to do the hike as there is almost no shade along the way... More

It was an experience! And we were glad we've done it. But from the South Crater on visibility was poor.. So no nice views until we were below the clouds again. But we could imagine why it's so popular and it must be amazing on a clear day!
