The Etruscan celebration of life--beauty, food, and wine--is alive today on the Mate family's boutique wine estate. Twenty years ago, Ferenc and Candace Mate, author and painter, fell in love with an abandoned 13th century friary--its romantic tower, courtyard, and two private hills. Within its 28 hectares of Mediterranean woods were fragrant fields of wild herbs. They planted vineyards on Etruscan-built terraces and in seven fields of varying altitudes, expositions and subsoils. For each site, they carefully chose a grape varietal, rootstock, and clones. In marl, mineral-rich shale and tufaceous soil--all abundant in calcareous fossils of a primordial ocean bottom--vines planted to a high density, forced their roots deep through varied layers, enhancing the grapes' flavors and perfumes. The Mate's hand-made wines, from organically grown, carefully selected grapes, are internationally acclaimed.

We enjoyed our second visit to Mate as much as our first visit 4 years earlier. A beautiful vineyard with amazing views and most importantly great wine. We would highly recommend a visit when in Tuscany. Jessica was an excellent host too. Hopefully we will have the chance to return for a third time!

Disappointing Tour
Sep 2020
Given the number of excellent reviews for this winery, my wife and I were very disappointed with the wine tour. In fact, the tour was one of the worst we have experienced, especially considering the tasting / tour cost of €30 per person (which is double the price were heard from another local winery). Having not read the owner's books or tried his wines, we had no romantic affiliation with the winery. For us it was another winery we wanted to try; unfortunately, it just did not measure up. The winery is very small, and there is really nothing of note to see or experience.
Our host, Jessica, is a nice, pleasant young lady.
I suggest you pass on this winery and try another winery.

Three Days in Tuscany
Sep 2019
We visited a number of wineries as we drove from Siena through Montepuliciano and then over to Montalcino, and Mate was one of our very favorite appointments. Our host was Jessica and she was very knowledgeable and it made for a very pleasant visit. We had not read the book about the winery but heard much of the story, and to see the restoration and then enjoy some of the wonderful wine they are producing was a wonderful experience. We look forward to the chance to return again sometime soon!

Personal wine experience!
Oct 2019
On our second visit to Italy, we were fortunate to be able to reserve a special tasting at Mate'. Yes, we read Ference's books and it was a treat to see their vision and hard work come to beautiful fruition, but it was the simple tasting room, the time in the vineyard and barrel room and the overall sense of hospitality from Jessica. It's easy to feel herded through another winery, but this is not that experience. Thank you Jessica! We loved the setting, the wines, the story and the hospitality.

Nice new winery

Small boutique winery that is a lovely place to visit, and good wine tasting as an extra. Jesica was a great host and the views from this property are exceptional. Will definitely return on our next visit.

Dreams do come true!
Sep 2019
I read Ferenc's book "The Hills of Tuscany" years ago when I fell in love with Italy. I loved the countryside, the people, the beauty, the food, the wines and the lifestyle that Ferenc described so well. His writing style makes you feel as if you are there, part of the family and part of the wonderful Italian life. Naturally I read his second memoir, "A Vineyard in Tuscany", with relish. And then, I HAD to visit the winery. I visit Italy almost every year and was finally able to schedule a visit to Mate Winery in September. It felt like coming home...the location, the fabulous gardens and the house did not disappoint. Neither did the vineyards, olive trees and the wines. Jessica was welcoming and extremely knowledgeable about the vineyards and wine making. And the wines, did I mention the wines? My friend and I were each so taken that we both bought a case to be shipped home! I highly recommend a visit to Mate, you will not be disappointed. P.S. Read Ferenc's books first!

Wonderful private tour
Jul 2019
I visited Mate Winery for a private tour with my family (8 adults, 3 small children) and had a wonderful experience. Jessica was so informative and personable and the tour was enjoyed by everyone. We were traveling with small kids and the winery was very accommodating. The property is stunning and the wine is fabulous. I highly recommend a visit to this slice of heaven in Montalcino!

Awesome Experience!
Jul 2019
My wife and I had an great time at the Mate Winery. The personal tour with Jessica was the perfect experience - she is very knowledgeable and friendly. The wines were excellent and the scenery was amazing. Definitely a must do if you're in the area (an added bonus if you've read the books). We especially enjoyed the barrel tasting portion of the tour.

Informative and personalized tasting; Jessica was terrific and we left with a real appreciation of the wines and area.

Like many, we came after reading A Vineyard in Tuscany, and were so glad we made the effort! The winery is situated among stunning views, and the tasting itself was unhurried, informative and very professional: thank you Jessica! We also met Candace (we are Canadian so that was a treat) and wandered about the vineyards. All in all it was a wonderful start to our Montalcino/Montepulciano excursion.
