The Falls of Shin is such a pleasing place to relax and watch salmon...

The Falls of Shin is such a pleasing place to relax and watch salmon leaping from the dynamic waterfall. The Falls of Shin are spectacular in their own right, but the sight of leaping salmon makes them even more special and something not to be missed. Falls of Shin is recognised as being one of the best places worldwide to watch leaping Atlantic Salmon. The fish can be seen anytime between May and November, with the late summer months making this almost guaranteed.

Following a fire which saw the former building burn to the ground, the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust, on behalf of the community were successful with a Stage 1 BIG Lottery application and were invited to make a Stage 2 funding application. The design concept of the building, created by CH Architecture, is loosely based on the image of a fish and is made up of a head, body and tail. Each part forms a distinctive function.

We are proud to have a 4* rating on TripAdvisor and another 4* with the Visit Scotland Rating Scheme. Please feel free to leave your own visitor comments!

The centre will feature a 60 seat cosy café, a gift shop with local produce stocked, an exhibition and interpretation area, a children’s play area along with an events plaza. This will all fit into the surroundings of the on-site forest and of course the leaping salmon.

Lovely friendly cafe built and run by the local community group in a very interesting new building. And lovely space outside with things to do for kids, easy walk to the falls, and woodland walks too. I will be back soon with my wee girl.

The outside of the building is impressive, the children's play area is good but in my opinion the inside café area is like sitting in an airport, plenty of windows but no atmosphere. No pictures to look at nothing to focus on just tables and chairs. It seems to be geared towards coaches. The shop is small. .

We went for afternoon tea in this newly reopened cafe, which is community run. The big positives - really friendly and attentive staff, who were welcoming and very efficient, in a good way. The cafe was really busy, but they were coping well. The tea in particular was wonderful - an organic Edinburgh brand. One of the nicest Earl Grey... More

We visited on a rainy Saturday a week after the grand re-opening and despite the weather it was really busy, which was great to see. The new cafe building is lovely and the big windows and high ceiling make it airy and bright. All the furnishings are good quality too and the overall effect is comfortable and inviting. Because it... More

Great to place visit if you like the outdoors and the chance to watch the leaping salmon. The newly opened community run coffee shop / restaurant is superb! All the staff are so friendly, polite and obliging it's worth going just to get a delicious freshly made sandwich served with a smile! We'll definitely be back.

My wife Margaret and I were visiting the wee town of Dornoch to meet up with our friends David and Eileen who live in Manchester. It was to be a celebration of yet another wedding anniversary. We'd all booked into the Dornoch Hotel again as that's where we normally meet up.. The hotel has recently changed hands from Shearings to... More
