Skaros was considered the most important of Santorini's five castle fortresses. The rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress constructed there offered protection from pirates.

If you're staying on Santorini then this really has to be done. The view of the blue domed church as you open TA for Santorini is of the church tucked behind the rock out of view from Imerovigli. You walk up behind the rock and...More

Hiked to the base of Skaros Rock. Views are spectacular! There were some young people climbing up to the top of the rock while we were there, but I would not recommend it. Looked dangerous. The trail to the base is excellent.

A great place for hiking the rock. It used to be a castle. Wear good hiking shoes to get to top of rock. Awesome views & great pic taking👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

A short to medium length path around the rock leads to the top. Along the way you can have a look at the ruins of the houses of the old town of the island which is a nice touch to the whole experience. On the...More

Lots of steps both ways but take your time its worth it. There is a church right on the end of it, and although we did not make it, you can get right up on top of skaros rock.

Great hike up Skaros Rock - I would give it a difficulty of 4 just because of all of the stairs. There is a hidden church on the other side with amazing views. Also, the climb to the top of the rock is very challenging....More

A good walk to the lower part of the rock - I did see people in flip flops and sandals, but at risk of sounding like my grandma, walking boots / trainers are definitely a better option. The final ascent to the very top involves...More

It's a good way to get the heart rate up...especially coming back. Don't miss it. To get right to the flat spot on top requires some climbing and a certain level of fitness.

This walk, direct from our hotel which overlooked the rock, took 45 mins going at a gentle pace and stopping for photos to get to the far end. Nothing was too difficult, mostly steps with a few rough parts of rock and lava gravel. We...More

Yes, you can get to the church without scaling to the top of the rock. It's actually near the bottom on the far side of the rock. The path is relatively easy to find, then you'll chose to go down or up. Going down is how to... More

As this is a well traveled trail, it is highly unlikely that you have found anything that is really old. Most likely it is fragments of something purchased in a local souvenir shop on the island. To be sure, you could take... More
