While traveling in the Sienna district, don't miss Buonconvento and don't miss this little gem of a gallery next to the Sienna gate. The beautiful paintings by Maddine Insalco and Joe Vinson capture the Italian landscape beautifully and a lot are done using centuries old techniques for painting on paper, making them easy to get home. There are also contemporary still life paintings and incredible abstract works that you have to see in person. Brilliant!

We did a day trip from Siena to Buonconvent. It is only a 25 minute train ride and a 5 minute walk to the center of town. The entry way is grand but not fancy. Wonderful town with only 3 main streets dotted with small shops and restaurants. Wander the back streets which has some nice architecture and lots of charming apartments and flowers.

The charming town of Buonconvento, just 20 minutes south of Siena, offers the perfect base for touring the most beautiful part of Tuscany, if not all of Italy. And what adds a special feature to this "bella" village is the presence of "La Porta" gallery owned and operated by artists Maddine Insalaco and Joe Vinson. This gallery offers a wide selection of their paintings .....from small 6" x 6" views of the area, perfect for tucking into a suitcase, up to larger pieces on both canvas and paper. They have revolving shows of other artists as well. The couple has been operating their week long plein air painting workshops "Etruscan Places in the area for more than 13 years and have a large following from the USA as well as parts of Europe. For more about them see <landscapepainting.com>.

This tiny gallery, just near the main entrance gate to Buonconvento is full of delightful, mainly small, oils paintings of local scenes painted by the two owners. The smaller paintings are well priced, for the quality of the art, to take home as a lasting memento of your trip to Italy. It isn't always open as the owners are often out and about making more paintings, so its probably worth a phone call if you are making a special visit.
