We climbed to the first level and had a good view of the surrounding area so didn't feel the need to pay the admission fee to climb to the top. Carriage rides were available in the parking lot and vendors offering cold beverages without being pushy.

See the pictures inside and the marble walls. Back when I was young, I counted the 365 steps to the top

Definitely something to do. Great restaurants all around it. Please be careful with the pocket pickers. Great historical site.

This is a beautiful monument dedicated to the independence of the Dominican Republic. This is a must see while in the city of Santiago.

Beautiful and well-maintained (though the elevator was under maintenance at the time of visit) historic monument to the Battle of Santiago (after which Dominicans first declared independence from Haiti), with amazing views of the city. Good restaurants nearby. Affordable admission (60 pesos, or about $1.50 USD). I had a great time.
