We drove in and enjoyed the quiet and the unquestionable beauty. Stopped for a picnic afternoon tea but had to give in and leave due to sandflies. Tracks very rough - muddy and potholes.

Hanmer forest is full of bird life and beautiful trees and bush. One of the best places for walking or cycling at any time of the year.

We walked - not hiked a couple of the trails in the forest. Took time to read the tree names and signs. Kids loved it - was well sign posted so no-one got lost. Walked in fine weather and then in the snow.

A plantation of European trees laid out on a bit of a grid - perfect for a stroll for all ages, bikes and dogs welcome. The colours in Autumn are spectacular.

Take the walk to the waterfall. It's a long way about 2.5 hours and its hard uphill walking but worth it when you get there. Lovely forest walks, there are also bridal and bike tracks.
