Imposing location with interesting history. Local guide was very knowledgeable and spoke good English. Could be a difficult climb for some over uneven ground. Reasonable cafe and facilities.

Limited tour of this excellent example of a restored Rhine Valley castle, quite expensive considering how quick the tour was, a 50 minute guided for 7euro pp, you are not allowed to explore the castle without a guide. No warning of the difficult access and...More

This is a beautiful Rhine castle but it was not easily accessible for seniors who have difficulty with uneven terrain and steep steps but it is very interesting and was my husbands favorite place on our Viking River Cruise.

My wife and I took the 45 minute tour and will not soon forget about this castle. To reach it from the parking lot, you can climb the 100 yards or so of stairs (with guardrail) or walk along the road. Then, the "fun" begins----the...More

Tour of Marksburg castle was fascinating. Showed off the best parts of the castle. Gave a real insight into life centuries ago. Views across the Rheine are amazing. Highly recommend it.

if you have trouble on uneven ground, this place is not for you. But...if you visit, you will get a glimpse of 13th century life. Wonder how many people it took to bring up an entire meal to the dining room on one table. Also...More

The castle is likely a nice castle. However, visitors should be aware that almost none of the castle is open unless you pay for a 1 hour guided tour. Not too expensive--but if you aren't going to pay for the tour, then I'd recommend you...More

The 13th century castle has been standing up on the top of hill, overlook the Rhine. You can see the castle from far away, also can visit it through each room, from bedroom, dining room, kitchen, torture chamber, black smith workshop, and Knight armoires.

Forget all the romantic movies about castles and ladies in flowing gowns. The tour of Marksburg Castle takes you to the real Middle Ages. The tour was fantastic. The castle consists of several parts joined by twisting passageways and narrow stone staircases, in which no...More

The climb up the hill from your bus will take your breath away... literally. The uneven rocks just inside the walls and further into the castle proper are somewhat dangerous. Take a walking stick and take your time. It is an... More
is it necessary to climb up to the castle or if you're on a bus trip, can it drop you off at the door? If you must climb, is there a handrail? How about inside, are there handrails for the steps? Thank you so much! Sandy D.

You do have to walk to the aCaste from the parking area but it is a fairly simple and enjoyable walk and the castle is well worth the effort
I have a mild balance issue, but my wife does not. On uneven surfaces, I typically simply hold onto her arm (or handrails). (1) Are many of the stone surfaces too uneven for this---or only one or two sections? (2) If too risky, am I able to let her go inside the castle by herself and still enjoy myself outside? (3) Does the tour end where it begins----so that we can easily meet if she enters the castle and I stay outside?

Hi- I have a balance issue too. The castle entrance is the worse part once you are through the locked door. I managed well, just held onto my husband's arm & took my time. You aren't rushed in that part of the castle. The... More
