Beautiful countryside as far as the eye can see. We went in October, so one could think that the lack of crops on the fields would make the area look drab. However, there was a quite beauty all around us, which contributed to our relaxing holiday.

This is a very beautiful area. The earth is rich and the hills rolling. I have always wanted to visit this area because of photos I've seen in coffee table books. Now I have some of my own beautiful memories from the drive through this beautiful area. It's worth going off the beaten path a bit.

We detoured through the Crete Senesi en route to Montalcino from Siena. Crete Senesi means ‘Sienese clays’, where the landscape assumes a lunar appearance due to the exposed sections of grey soil. The dramatic scenery began to unfold, as we took the SP438 from Taverne D’Arbia and headed towards Asciano. There is a panoramic viewpoint (hard to miss, several cars... More

You must enjoy this scenery if you drive your own car. From Asciano to Siena, this is one of those roads you'll never forget. And it's the best summary of this Tuscan region. As if you were painting a big oleo.

A very different view of the tuscan landscape with the clay hills and golden fields and views for miles around.

The Crete Senesi has such a beautiful landscape. We were there in April, and it was very green and fresh. Lots of scenic roadside stops for photos!

This area is just astonishing. Soft yellow hills, different from the Chianti or the area around which is greener and has cypresses. Make sure to visit Asciano in the heart of Crete Sinesi. There's supposed to be outdoor art in Leonina, unfortunately we were not able to find it.

A bit hard to find but gorgeous and worth seeing! Any time of the year is gorgeous but my favorite was in early October to see the winery and May to see the greenery and flowers.

I don't think you need a tour to see this. If you drive from Siena to Asciano or any other nearby towns, you won't miss it. The area is filled with traditional Tuscan scenery, rolling hills of green and yellow, poppies, and ancient towns, but there are occasional patches where the land has eroded and you can see these unique...
